Here is my initial thought for a PVC DIY home filter system. My M/S paint cheesy picture:

Using home filters (from any big box hardware stores), there are two micro filters and a carbon filters in there. it connects to the faucet and runs into holding tanks. I can pick this thing up and move it from room to room if I have to.

Completed Pictures:

for more information on the holding tank see post: http://www.mugwump-fish-world.com/index.php?topic=83.0

No tanks or fish just good friends and allot of fun...

I have something similar that's wall mounted. I fill my holding tub with it, then pump out to the tanks. Remember, not too much hot water.....burns out the carbon and makes it ineffective...
Mild water changes work fine..or plop a heater in the holding tank, if you wish..
