I'd heard of them but had never tasted them.  I bought a can of kippers on a whim.  The larder was getting bare so I opened the can of kippers and gave them a taste.  OMG they are delish!  I knew that they would make a meal.  I browned some rice in unsalted butter, added onion and frozen peas, poured in chicken stock and liquid form the can of kippers,  tore the kippers into small hunks and simmered for 20 minutes.  Voila!  An excellent meal from a can, the freezer, and the pantry with no effort at all.  Try it.
Always move forward. Never look back.

Are they like sardines?  I also have heard of them but not had any.  Sounds like a tasty dinner!

They are canned like sardines are but these come with a built in rich smokey flavor.  Buy a can and give them a taste.  I bet they'd be good on a bagel with sour cream instead of smoked salmon.  I bet it wouldn't hurt to toss some capers in for a bit of a kick.
Always move forward. Never look back.

Kippers are herring.  Sardines are well...sardines.  Totally different flavors.

How imprecise a name is "sardine".
Sardine is an imprecise term for any number of small, silvery saltwater fish related to the herring and found throughout the world. They tend to travel in large schools close to the water's surface and are harvested fresh in the summer.

I'd say it's comparable to "minnow".   LOL

Everyone knows the minnow got shipwrecked on a deserted island.
