What would your single best piece of advice be for someone brand new to the hobby?

Read about what you're about to undertake. Be informed.

I would say take it slow. The bacteria cycle can't be rushed. There's plenty of time to get all the fish you want if you take it slow. Or they buy a bunch of fish cuz the guy at the fish store is selling fish. They all end up dead and the tank sits empty. We've all heard of this, right?

Go slow. It will be a lot more fun with live fish.

I would say take a look at different stores before you buy anything.
Different stores give different storys and give you the chance to compare.

Water changes and don't overfeed.

Fishkeeping is not Rocket Science.  Don't become over whelmed with all the terminology you are going to come across.  It is a most rewarding hobby and once you get a bit of experience, there are so many paths for you to explore that it never becomes old.

Do all the research you can. And then have fun. We all have made mistakes along the way. That is how we become better by are mistakes

My advice would be to change lots of water.  I can't help it.  I'm a Discus person :-[

Overfeeding I think is one of the most common mistakes I would suggest feeding lightly and designate one person in the household to do this for obvious reasons.

There's so much good advice I don't think I could stop at one. I would tell them everything I could think of if they let me.

Avoid overstocking, over feeding and do frequent water changes.
