They had it at some universities I worked at.
It was way faster at the time.
Don't have any very current experience.

...they're now finishing up a big fiber loop around the education corridor and communities....the communities were/are last to get it....been around No. Ill. Univ. for many years and now they have revamped the whole shabang...newer optic, eral......it screams I'm told....I better max out my ram, huh ?.. :)
I think it might have been about 10x the speed of wire.
