I would have said exactly why not except when I answered it was morning and I don't communicate well until afternoon huh.  The greatest draw back is the tank size necessary.  They get huge.  200 gallons is a minimum IMHO but the more room they have the happier they are.  If I had unlimited funds I could afford huge tanks.

I love them because they're the sexiest fish I have ever seen.  It's something about the way they move.  I wish I could 'splain it better.  In general I find that live bearers are a snore but Rays are live bearers.  Unlike guppies and such water quality has to be pristine for them to breed.  They generally have two kids and the kids are called "pup's"  How sweet it that?

There's a guy named Mike Beals who breeds Rays.  He was a Discus importer.  He must have been doing it for fun because I bought fish from him a 2 different NADA's and he charged me what they cost him!  That's what he told me and I know what quality Discus cost and he was telling the truth.  One of the fish went on to go BIS and the one from the next year took 3 in it's class.  He got tired of Discus and now breeds and sells Rays.  He told me that he has cameras on all the tanks so he can watch the rays while he's at work.  How cool is that?

...there are a few folks around here now raising them.....usually one big tank...one gal had a 540 gallon made just for her rays....a guy in Iowa builds nice tanks....

..I think that I would end up sitting in the tank playing with them.....coffee in hand and tunes going.... |^| 8) |^|

For me it's just a pipe dream.  I'd want to breed them, and if I bred them I have to sell them, then I'd have to ship them.  Shipping Discus and Angels is stressful enough.  Shipping off my "pups" in a bag of water is something I would not be able to handle emotionally.

...nor I.....I'm sure there's a special way... huh...plus it would have to be next day air for sure...that alone is $$$$$'s...and the rays won't be cheap either....as they definitely aren't for everyone
