lol  Yes, chicken eggs.

I leave doors open in good weather.  I have seen chickens in the house but they leave soon because they find nothing to eat.  I guess this hen walked down to the fish room and got into the cabinet from the back, which is open.  It's a private secure place. Hens like that.  I can't imagine how she found a comfortable place to sit down and lay an egg among all that fish junk.  I guess the security of the place was more important than comfort for her.

I've been checking the nest boxes every day for weeks.  They have been totally ignored.  Tomorrow I'll buy a bunch of fake eggs to put in them.  Over the weekend I'll see if I can't find a way to make the nest boxes more private for them.  I'll still be checking the fish cabinet every day ::)

It happened a full month before it was supposed to.  It caused me great wonder because the eggs were in a fish junk cabinet.  I found it extraordinary.  Good choice of word, Dennis.

Were the eggs a good size? It seems like a chicken's first few eggs are on the small side, and sometimes with a goofy shape.

One was small but heavy like a well formed egg.  The second was of medium size.

I collect an egg from the fish junk cabinet every day.  The hen comes in through the pet door in the fish room.

Very nice Liz.  Eggs are one of natures perfect foods.

I always take what experts say with a grain of salt.  When they said that butter was bad I didn't believe them.  When they said to go for low fat products I didn't believe that either.  Same thing with what they said about eggs.

I had a strawberry smoothly made with a raw egg and honey and half and half when I got home from work.  It was great!  I need to start making home made mayo but I have almost a whole jar of Hellman's in the fridge.

I have two hens laying now.  (there were two in the fish junk cabinet today.  They were in the box where I keep spare heaters and small air equipment ::))  At least I know if they lay there a snake or coon won't get to them and the eggs will stay clean.  God knows what I'll do when all 12 hens start giving me an egg every day.

I'll either sell the extras of give them away to my grooming customers.  I have one woman who makes cakes for a living.  I asked to see pics of her work.  She sent me a pic of a wedding cake.  She's an artist!  She brings her dog every 3 weeks.  She can have them for free.  My customer that come weekly to monthly can all have them for free.  I'll eat as many as I can, feed some to the dogs, and I guess sell the rest.

"I always take what experts say with a grain of salt."

Definitely when it comes to nutrition. Its the story of the elephant:

In a darkened room a group of men once sought to examine an elephant. Taking hold of a different part - an ear, a leg, the tail - each one mistook his particular part for the whole. In the darkness, each of the men became convinced that the elephant was the object he himself had felt - a fan, a rope, a pillar - and so on.

I made this from an old tool box.  Chickens can jump into a private place and lay their eggs in seclusion.  Before, I had three sweater boxes on the floor and I ended up finding my daily egg in with the fish junk.  I found no egg in the fish junk cabinet to day.  The hen did not lay in the box I'd made, but that's OK.  Others will find it to be an attractive place.  She laid in one of the two sweater boxes I placed on top of the tool box.  I have the tool box seeded with 3 fake eggs and I have one fake egg in each sweater box.

...Way cool ''repurposing", Liz.
...BTW, I started today by putting an egg in my smoothie...makes it smoother...

Just think of the extra nutrition with few added calories you get from adding an egg,  If you lived close I could give you eggs from happy free range hens who have access to everything they need.  They say that store bought eggs have just as much of what is good for you in them but I don't see how that can be true.

....and I would figure out something I could do for you or give you to show my appreciation....

...definitely would have you groom Murf...all the groomers say he's a good dog to groom...he's pretty laid back until he sees or hears his Mommy come home, then it's screeching and scratching at the glass slider door...

Two eggs today.  One in the fish cabinet, the other in the tool box.

Also, Dr. Pecker started crowing this morning.  I heard him try it yesterday and it was a pretty sad attempt.  Sounded like something was in pain.  this morning he nailed it.  It was not the most manly crow but it was an acceptable crow.  I wonder how long it will be before he starts having his way with his ladies?

I have 4 hens laying now.  One is a good hen and lays in the tool box.  Another has a sense of humor and lays  in the fish junk cabinet.  A third lays under the chicken house so I have to get down on my hands and knees and roll the egg to me using a stick ::)  The fourth lays where my husband build a little building on the back of the house to put the hot water heater.  He wasn't a carpenter.  He had never built a house.  Making a place for a water heater didn't occur to him until the house was built, so he put it outside huh  It never bothered me...We lived in that strangely built house happily for many years and now the chickens are making use of it in it's falling down condition.

Still...I want my chicken to do right and lay in acceptable places.  I don't want to have to hunt all around the property every time I hear a hen sing the egg song.  I was given a used 10 hole commercial laying box about 20 years ago.  It's pretty bashed up after all this time but if I take the sawzaw to the bottom 5 laying boxes I can make the top five usable.  It will be my project for the weekend.

When the weather turns cool I'll lock the hens in their house for a week.  Chickens, like fish,  have to lay and look for the place that feels best to them.  If they can't lay in their chosen place they will be forced to pick another place.  I was certain that the tool box would be a big hit with them but I was wrong.  I can understand that the sweater boxes aren't secluded enough for them.  The box with 5 nesting places that hangs on the wall with a perch in front will give them more acceptable places to lay when I lock the poor things up for a week.

I hate having to confine animals.  I don't have to do it often but sometimes it's the best solution to a problem.  I locked Charlotte the horse (as opposed to Charlotte the truck) in the pasture this morning because she left a pile of horse shit in her driveway.  The tender grass is getting tough and she went looking for greener pastures.  She'll be locked up until the volunteer rye grass is up enough to graze.  Hell, she gets the best feed twice a day and top quality hay when the grass isn't top quality.  The damn horse has it made.

I've decided that I can no longer allow Cha Cha to rule my life now that she's healed up and happy.  She's not coming to work with me every day.  I will have to cage her while I'm away.  I hate it but otherwise she will follow me down the road until she looses me and will keep running until she finds someone else who will take her in.  She has to learn that she is mine, and that if I leave I will also come back, then turn her loose and be happy to see her.  I'm finally figuring out how this dog's mind works and what her emotional problems are.  I shall heal her and make her right.  It will involve caging >:(

sorry I went off on a rant.  I thought I was just going to write about chickens.  Chickens are easy.  Horse is easy.  Dogs are not always easy.

Looks like number 5 has joined in the laying.  I knew that something was up with her.  She was singing the eggs laying song and looking very distressed.  She came in the house looking for a place that suited her but left when she didn't find one.  Finally, she settled down.  I walked out to the hen house and saw her in the tool box.  I already collected the egg from the hen that lays there and the 3 from the three that lay in inappropriate places.  I'm glad that this girl found the place that I made them to lay in.

Six eggs today!!!  Only 3 in the wrong place.  If the rest all lay in the correct place I won't bother locking the hens up to train them to do right.
