They certainly were Pauline.  One of the few bands that sound as good, if not better, live as they do on their studio recordings.  I've always assumed, that after playing hour after hour in countless honky tonks they got to the point of being so tight a band that they just instinctively knew what the others were going to do.  Much like the Beatles did by playing all those shows in Hamburg.
