Catfish are great for keeping your tank bottom free from excess food. Cory's ,for example, are usually the smaller variety seen and sold in pet stores. I've found that at least trios of Cory's are best for them.
Some folks on here breed cories too. I only breed std, Hi Fin, and Sterbias at the moment...and the Sterbias are being stubborn.....LOL
Have you got your sterbai a spawn before Jon? Can you easily tell when they are gravid?

I have them separated now, in a pod of 9....now as active as the reg cory's but they're starting to perk up some.....Josh, I'm guessing that the females, besides getting a lump, will have their bellies change color like cory's do.....is that right?
I have mine seperated now too but this is my first attempt at breeding any kind of cory. So I am unsure of what to look for other the actual eggs lol. Any suggestion/info is greatly appreciated.
Well, I know that the Sterbias like plant leaves and don't normally lay in clusters like std cory's do....but this is a first time around for us too.....time will tell???
I have all mine seperated because of moving. My Sterbias lay all over thetank. 5 Or 6 eggs in a spot
Thanx, JR...good to know....
I have found putting a few oak leaves in the tank seems to help. they always lay eggs on them. also the infrosia that grows on them is good food for the fry

Hmmm..oak leaves....I keep small swords and java fern..they like those too..and little anubias...
Never tried Oak leaves. But I will Be.
Do the sterbias belly change color or give any kind of sign ahead of time?
I think they do...but stay tuned....I'm watching them closely
Generally with cories how does it change? Get darker, pink, or what?
Kind of a magenta color.....
Ok thanks Jon! I'll keep an eye out. Keep me updated with yours.
Will do....they were scrambling yesterday, so hopefully something's going on.....??
Yes mine have been very active too is that a good sign then?

Will they cross breed with other cory's?
nope......a little different, I believe...maybe Cp'tn Bob will chime in...????
My breeders were always in species tanks so they didn't have a chance to cross breed.
Sudden activity is the clear sign of spawning soon. Lots of action.

That is good news

I have kept mine in species tanks also. So that would not happen. Was told a very long time ago it could happen. But have never seen it.

me either...but I keep mine separated too....
I've only seen pictures of the "T" formation of interbreeding. Don't remember if the fry survived.
Whats the "T" formation?
The female points her head into the side of the male creating what they call the "T". At that point the eggs are fertilized and clamped between her fins. They are quite active while this is going on. He will make several passes wiggling over her head before the "T" is formed.
Very cool thread. Love all the cory info. What kind of tank do you keep these in? Bare bottom, sand or gravel?
I use gravel and small live plants...java fern, anubias....the cory's like to spawn on them, as well as every stink'n glass pane there is....LOL...
Sponge filters and/or a small hob.....20 longs are perfect...my hi-fin pod is larger and in a 30 long...
the 20 long also has a small bubble wand, for entertainment....they love to flit around it sometimes
Yep, me too. Twenty longs are perfect and a sand/gravel mix is just what the doctor ordered.
I use 30 gal and play sand. I have java Swords. For plants. I have 12 to a tank. How biig are your pods Jon.
My hi fin pod is probably 23-26....the std pod is 15...the Sterbia pod is 9....odd numbers are best, with males out numbering females at about 2-1 or 3-1......the up and coming pod...LOL....that's a circus troop.....shoaling from one end to another...while the rear piles into the pack at each turn....hilarious to watch....
I think we talk about odd even before Jon. I keep 8 Males to 4 females. It is easer for me to keep count. I had mine in 20 longs also. Got a heck of a deal on 30 gal tanks. When I set them back up it will be in 20 long

I know...I guess the odd comes from the 2 to 1 ratio thingy....LOL...heck, they can't count.... 8)
Any luck with ur sterbai Jon?

nothing yet.....they're not to active lately, might try some successive water changes??
My Sterbai are laying! Now I gotta do some quick research lol
cool....didn't Bob post something on them here somewhere??
Not that I have been able to find yet. So far I have only found one egg that I could pull. I have watched them fertilize several others but haven't been able to find them. Do they really fertilize each egg one at a time?

Yep. and the Sterbia's will attach them most anywhere...under plant leaves,etc...lookee. lookee....LOL.....
here's an article

well put...... ;D
I still only found one egg but that was while I was feeding them. Would feeding cause them to postpone laying the rest?
I, myself, never disrupt a spawn of anything by feeding , etc...
Well I was already feeding them when I noticed the one lonely egg
bottom feeders are a very unsong hero of our hobby they do a great job. :)
