What is good to cross to HB. I introduced Zebra. I back crossed to pick up ps which is a weak but beautiful gene. I can think of nothing but crossing to a blue. It has been done before but I don't mind reinventing the wheel if the wheel is hand made by me.
If I don't go to blue, what other choices are there that might excite me? My HB's are good but if I go on breeding the same old thing I will surely die of boredom.
I like the blue half blacks, there a pretty fish. You could also do an albino half black. I think Ed has a koi half black too.

Ed has a few koi that look similar HB, but you
can not have a Koi HB....the gold marble, or gold, in double dose will mask the expression......I would have to double check, but I believe that a/a masks it too....
As for the Albino half blacks....here's a thread from some time back....they never were quite successful tho......I thought that I'd seen a pic of something with reversed colors...or lighter colored in the half black expression area...???....can't find it yet......??...could have been a mutant gold?....Frank was trying g/g h/h a while back but I don't think he scored...g/g masking the black..anyway....

Here's a pic from further in the thread....note the partial HB expression....also, I'm not seeing where James did a cross to a true HB to verify he had h/h, in lieu of h/+.....???

Hey Liz how many half black pairs are you currently working with? I've always been fascinated by half blacks but never had any

Ed is down to just this ONE that has a kinda halfblack look to it anymore. As they continue to grow out, the black in the back section of the others has spread and thinned out much more than this one did.
Sorry bout the crappy phone camera pix (too damn lazy to get the real camera out right now)(http://i61.tinypic.com/2iijqyo.jpg)

Nice pics, Ed....great looking Koi too... ;D

I have a ton of hb pairs but most are for sale. I'm currently working with 2 pairs. One pair is very prolific and are excellent parents. They're both ps's. The other pair is a superveil male and standard female, both het for ps. They foil me at every turn. Haven't been able to get get their kids to free swimming yet. I have many sub adults and may keep one more pair.
Neat. Do you have good success with them turning? I've heard it can be hard to get ones that turn or have a very very low percentage that do turn if any do
It varies hugely from pair to pair. My ps pair that are so prolfic came from a spawn that close to 100% turned, so I have high hopes for their fry. I usually can count on 30 to 40% turning.
Do you have any pics of your pairs?
No, but I'll take some and post them.

Yes they are.. ;D...Liz has done a sweet job with the HB lines.... ;D

This is the prolific ps pair.
And here's a pic of their first ever spawn. Not bad for first timers.

That veil......what a beauty!
Your HB are gorgeous Liz.
Thank you. I like that male because he has big fins that never droop. I picked that female for him because I don't want finnage to get out of hand.
I like the ps pair, too. They aren't extreme, they're ps's and they are born to raise fry.
Did y'all see the huge pile of live CBWs on the bottom of the tank with the fry? The fry are to small to eat one whole. They pick at them all day long and by WC time the worms are all gone and the water isn't nasty.
Nice pairs you have there Liz!
Wait a minute, that didn't sound right LOL
lol, I have only one pair of those and although they are a small pair I've been told that they are a good pair. At least they don't droop. I don't like droop in things that are supposed to stand up.

uh oh....here we go.......... ;D
I wouldn't have brought it up (forgive the pun) if I hadn't been given an open invitation. Y'all have no idea how absolutely harmless I am. Only thing wrong with me is that my sense of humor is a little twisted :-[
Cool....as long as you're 'up front' about it, go ahead and bring it up..........he he he.........................
You, of all people, egging me on ::)

Back to the subject, I don't care for the albino hb. Nothing about them rings my bell. Besides, I'm not fond of albinos in general. It's a weak gene.
Now that the thread has gone to a pg13 rating why does you cone look like a male body part? Is it a fertility symbol? Does Barb make them? If it works i want one.
OMG, now I'm in trouble. Barb told me not to post pics of her's because she's a polite lady. Later, she said that she had become less strict, so I don't know where I stand.
The tera cotta one was made my Barb. The one in with the ps's that you can see really well was made by a local artist. I have 3 of his and 2 of Barb's.
They make excellent breeding cones and they're funny!
Those are amazing pairs! I've never seen pearlscale halfblacks before
Thanks. They are my most exciting pair. I can't wait until their fry are dimes so I can cull. Mug says I should wait, so I shall. The parents aren't extreme in finnage but their fins are strong.. These produced a huge spawn on their very first try. The proof will be in the puddin'.
Well after I get set back up better I'll be getting a hold of you for some halfblacks. I've always wanted to try my hand at them
