Darwin proposed a sequence of reef/island types island with fringing reed --> island with barrier reef --> atoll (original island gone, ring of small islands on top of reef). It was based on the island sinking (including the submerged land the reef is on) and the reef growing fast enough to keep up.

Now someone has added sea level changes and can explain more different types of island-reef combinations.
