Title: new 55 gallon
Post by: big b on July 03, 2016, 09:09:46 PM
I just got a 55 gallon. This will be the biggest tank I've ever had. I have a rough sketch of what i would like. I was thinking about getting
10-ish amano shrimp
4 bamboo shrimp
20(to start with) cherry shrimp.
1 vampire shrimp
20 ember tetras
12 corys
20 harlequin rasbora
3-4 hill stream loach
2 honey gourami
5 kuhli loach(i can emove them if i need to)
20 neon tetra
10 otto
I was thinking maybe some nerite snails, if they wont attach my shrimp. I am going to make this tank a bare bottom tank. I am thinking of planting some plants in a long some what shallow clay tray(if I can find one). The filters i am getting is an emperor 400 and a marine land penguin 350. I was thinking about using enough trays to cover 1 side of the tank and have the other side as a hiding place. I would put some caves and pvc pipes for anybody to hide in.  I am planning to do 1-2 50% water changes per week
I have never delt with a tank this big, I don't know if there are too many fish or if I'm all good. I would really appreciate some advice with my stocking.

I would say a few to many fish. If your gonna have the shrimp, make sure you put a prefilter on the intake tube of the filters.

I agree, it does seem like too many fish....a quick count goes over a hundred+ fish...

Way too many fish. Watch out for those Nerite snails. While they don't reproduce in fresh water they still lay eggs and those eggs are a pain in the butt to get off of the decor.

Ok, thank you for saying that. I'm thinking about knocking the tetras down to 12 each. and knock the ottos down to 6. Would that be enough or should I get rid of the ember tetras completely?

I have heard that they lay eggs in freshwater that don't hatch before. The only decor that I am planning to have are pvc pipes, drift wood, and caves. I'm feeling that a quick bath would get the eggs off. Would i be right?.
Don't worry ilroost, i always use a pefilter tube ;D.

You would be wrong. I have to take my driftwood out of the tank and scrape those eggs off. It is a pain in the butt to do.

Hmm, I'm gonna look a few pictures of the eggs and see how they look. If they don't look too bad, I can live with it. So I looked at it, I cant live with those ugly little eggs. Can they lay eggs by themselves? I once had 1 of them and I didnt see any eggs.

Well, I guess I will deal with it when I get to it  wfwf. But anyway, would my stocking plans be fine if I got rid of the ember tetras and kept the other tetras at 20 each and the ottos at 10?

B...I know you've been keeping fish for a while...but here's my suggestion....start with some of your favorite fish...not too many at once. Then add to the tank every 3-4 weeks or so until you see them start to stress out or nip/fight each other, gasp at the surface for air, or act abnormal...then back off adding any more to the tank.

I would start with a pod of corys...10 maybe, and 10 neons or cardinals, and a couple otos, and couple BNs. Then add to this group. If you add bamboo shrimp in the beginning, there may not be enough plankton type food to keep them alive (they are definitely filter feeders and need the food that an established tank will probably provide...especially if you're going bare bottom.

This way you start out with a pizazz looking tank while everyone acclimates gradually. I have a very overstuffed community tank myself and, surprisingly, have several species spawning in it. However, I usually have it heavily filtered.

I'm telling you the way I'd do it because it's the way I've done it several times and works well if you have the patience for it and don't want to lose a lot of nice fish right off the bat. You seem to like doing a tank the way I do when I'm not set up for breeding.

Just my thoughts.

That's also a good way to get  anew filter system going well.

I always start off with a few fish in the beginning. I normally get about half dozen to start with.I actually have 6 corys in another tank that I am gonna use for this tank. So I'm gonna move them first. Bamboo shrimp will probably be one of the last things added to the tank because of that reason. I am thinking about getting the corys first, getting the neons next. I am going to be ordering a few plants, shrimp, snails, and some fish. I will probably order them in a month or two, I dont get money very fast  :P. The cherry shrimp will be in that order. I think I'm gonna get rid of the kuhli loaches and hillstream loaches, I dont think the kuhlis are right for this tank, and the hillstreams, they are too delicate for me I think.

My mom is wanting a fishtank for a little corner in our family/tv room. I have convinved her to get a 29 gallon. She is wanting some of my guppies in my 20 gallon to go in it. I am planning to move all of the guppies to the 29 eventually. So I will have an empty 20 gallon tank. I am probably gonna post a new thread about stocking my 20 gallon soon.

I had an amazing idea today. Instead of getting half neon tetras and half harlequin tetras, how about all neon tetras? I have seen a bunch of planted tanks with neon tetras and they looked amazing.

It's story time. My mom wanted a fish tank in the family room and some of my guppies to go in it. I convinced her to get a 29 gallon. Petco was having the dollar per gallon sale and it was just about to end so we went the next day and got it. The person who helped us get the tank inside the car(I could have done it myself) was happy and helpful. A day has passed by now. We went to a couple places to find some piece of furniture to hold the tank. We went to 2 glorified thrift stores (ran by the same people and both very over priced) and 2 goodwill(s). The first one we went to, we saw the guy from petco. (He was young, college age. probably had 2 jobs to help pay for college) He brought out a piece of furniture that was not wide enough to hold the tank. While I was looking for something to hold it, he told my mom about a sale at peco that was happening for the next 3 days. All live fish, shrimp, snails, and plants were 20% off. (I never buy fish from petco anymore, a couple bad cases of ich and a lot of dead fish because of petco) We got 6 amano shrimp(I wanted 10 but i settled for 6 cuz of mother) a bunch of plants, and just before he had bagged all of them up, I remembered about nerite snails. I "dragged" him over and pointed out 5 thumb sized zebra nerites and 2 thumb sized red spot nerites.
The snails and shrimp are currently in my 5 gallon until I get my 55 up and running. I also just switched one of my filter pads from my 38 gallon to my 55 gallon. I hope that the filter pad has enough bacteria to get my 55 cycled  ???

Well, it seems like the title no longer fits. I decided the fish I had in my 38 were slightly over crowded in there so I moved them to the 55 where they will have plenty of space. Instead of stocking a 55 gallon, I will be stocking a 38 gallon. The tank is a bit dirty since I went bare bottom because I had a bunch of bottom feeders in there. I'm gonna clean it, make sure all duckweed and snails are gone then start it up again. I am considering letting the tank run with just a few red eye tetras and a little bit of gravel with dwarf hair grass to see if it will grow for me.

Yep, I'm planning to buy a lot of 30 cherry shrimp so that I can get a good colony going quickly. Gonna cost $45. Or $30 if I can get the money at the same time they are doing their cherry shrimp for $1.
I am considering to get maybe 1 or 2 bamboo shrimp and 1 vampire shrimp later on. Also, I was tossing around the idea of thai micro crabs and a dwarf mexican crayfish. What ya think?

So, I'm gonna change this thread a bit. I'm gonna make it about my 38 gallon and my 55 gallon. I just planted about half of my 55 gallon. 22 inches to be exact. I'm hoping my rainbow shark and male bristle nose pleco don't charge in and uproot all of the plants up.

For now, my 38 gallon is full of water with nothing in it. except fish poop, and snails and a bit of duck weed. I am completely starting over in my 38 gallon. I have 6 filter pads stuffed into 1 of my filters in my 55 gallon. I'm planning to instantly cycle this tank once i get a new filter. Then I'm gonna keep some red eye tetras in there to keep the cycle going. I think I have 7 left. Used to have 10, 1 died a month or two after I got them. The other ones just vanished during their stay in the 20 gallon red guppy tank.(Thanks mug, the red guppies are doing FANTASTIC. The blue guppies never bred very much and died out)

There is currently 1 angelfish,1 blue gourami,1 rainbow shark,1 african leaf fish,2 albino bristle nose plecos,1 normal bristlenose pleco(baby),1 flag fish(temporarily),7 corys, 5 kuhli loaches, and soon to be, 1 leopard bush fish in the 55 gallon. I'm considering a banjo catfish, I have liked them for a while. I have read that they are very peaceful for most of the time, would he get along with my other fish? I'm not worries about most of them. Just my rainbow shark and gourami. The gourami is a bit of a pain in the ass, she is constantly going after my angel and I think the shark but I'm not too sure if she is going after the shark. She is only about 2-2.5 inches. I sometimes see the rainbow shark going after the angel as well. The shark is about 5-6 inches long. He is big enough to cause harm to a banjo catfish with ease. What do yall think?
