We have had 4 spawns since Friday.... and 2 other picking and a few in the 120 doing funky stuff. Might have to sell a pair or 2

I had two spawns last night the chocolate blue spawned again. and the clown/he spawned last night. I'm going to let them keep there spawns this time there's only so much tank space and so many fry.

Sweet !! 8)
The St. Isabel/Rio Negro spawned today. That makes me happy.

They make pretty babies, huh?....love the long anal fin on the stripers... ;D
Update in my parent raisers. My second plat pair did a great job in the community tank until the fry went free swimming. Then they swam into the wrong side of the tank and become good food for the others.
My mana x spawn is free swimming but I think the parents have been helping themselves to treats as I don't see very many. I do have a black gravel that I'm going to have to do something about in that tank.
All things considered I think the parents of both spawns did a pretty decent job. Tomorrow I will move a plat spawn that I pulled to larger quarters.
I do like it when they parent raise. It makes things easier. The first successful spawn the St. Isabel/Rio Negro had they started to eat the free swimmers too. My clown/He are still doing good. There starting to free swim. This is about the time they eat there fry too. There so close to parent raising.
I have free swimmers, They are getting better at parent raising. They didn't eat half there spawn this time when I did there water change.
I have found out if I do a water change before they free swim the parents will eat the spawn. I guess i freak them out too much when I change there water.
(http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y461/b125killer/07552cdf-c80d-4de1-817f-e034f5795be4_zps79812ff1.jpg) (http://s1276.photobucket.com/user/b125killer/media/07552cdf-c80d-4de1-817f-e034f5795be4_zps79812ff1.jpg.html)
Nice.....you can do 2-3 gal changes easily too....just do them daily, or every other day...they'll get used to the rhythm.....and it's not as upsetting as larger changes....
I agree with Jon. With my Discus I change water every day. They're used to it. It doesn't put them into a tizzy. They will attack the siphon hose but that's a sign of good parenting instincts.
I think there teaching me more of what they like. I can't feed them when they have the spawn. Or they will eat the eggs Then when the eggs become wigglers I can feed them but can put a hose or hand or anthing in there water. They just want things there way. And they have slowly been showing me what there way is.
That's the way it works. We learn from the fish. Ain't no point in trying to teach them. I can feed but I've found that the pair eat very little when they are guarding eggs and wigglers so I feed them little until the fry free swim. When the pair has fry eating from their sides they get hungry. Very hungry. Not all my pairs have been that way, but most have.
Yea there the only pair I have that have successfully parent raised. I have another that is so close it's killing me. They will get them to free swim but there lunch after that. I'm not going to pull there spawns yet. There got them that far it shouldn't be too much longer before they figure it out.
Some time last year I got some Plecos that have wild blood. I got them from Jon. I'm not sure he remembers it's been so long. last Friday I put one of the wild blooded females in with one of my tank raised plecos. I was looking for them in there tank and I found them both in the cave. He has her pinned in the back. I'm hopeing they will spawn for me. This is his first spawn, I'm not to sure about her. She was in my planted tank. And I don't really know how many plecos were spawning in there.
If he's got her trapped back in there...it won't be long...check later...LOL.....The 'stud miffin' has G'ma in the cave too....LOL......
I was a little surprised how quickly he took to the cave. He's never seen a cave in his life. Somehow he knew what to do and how to get his new lady in there.
It's the candle light and smooth talk ;D ;D ;D ;D
This is what my plat pair # 2 is up to.

LOL...and of course, on the filter intake....LOL....on another note...G'ma and the 'Stud Muffin' produced a cave full of eggs.... ;D.....she's a spawning machine....and he seems to be quite capable of keeping up with her.... ;D
Nice spawn, I hate it when my fish spawn on intake tube. The side of the tank is another spot they like to spawn on.
That's good for you on the pleco spawn Jon. My new pair haven't done anything. She must of not liked his cleaning or the smooth talk. ;D
The only fish spawning around here are my Endlers. Hundreds and hundreds of em.
Barb
That's the second straight time they spawned on that tube. There are 2 slates in that tank and they were nice and clean too. Jon congrats on yet another cave full of eggs. I have my BNs divided across several tanks and most of them have not reached maturity yet. I have caves for them when they get ready.LOL
Not a great shot but these are peas from plat pair # 1. This pair always spawns on the slate. At last count I had 225 of these and that's after culling out most of the albinos and belly sliders. I need to really get down in there and start some serious culling once I get a better look at the fins.
Nice spawns, Willie....grow em big bro.... ;D
The parents are 10, 11 months old at most.
Nice...they'll produce lots of fry in the coming years.... ;D
I know that this doesn't count because it's not a spawn, but I came home to one of my nice home grown Blue Diamonds flirting with my Snake Skin/BD cross NADA class winner. I will not get my hopes up.
Light the candles, put on the Barry White and uncork some wine for em.... ;D..good luck, Liz
They will have to decide what to do or not to do on their own. I could always pour a bottle of imported beer in their tank, or add a bag of pennies for luck, but I don't think I will.
Only other pair that has spawned recently is a Pigeon Blood male with an F1 Curipera female. It is NOT a good cross. Those two can have their fun in the community tank but I want never to produce babies from them.
Well, guess what? They spawned. I am overjoyed.

You can see my fine man's pic here. He's the 7th from the top.http://forum.discusnada.org/showthread.php?738-NADA-2012-Show-Photos His wife is good, but few Discus can hold a candle to the male.
Sorry the NADA site( http://nadaatlanta2012.com/?nr=0 ) is expired in August.... :'(
Dang. It worked for me. Oh well, I'll take pics of the pair when I get them in a breeding tank next week.
Well I have 2 new spawns to report. My manacapuru x spawned early this afternoon and a plat pair spawned about 2 days ago in the community tank. I just moved some pre dime plats into a grow out tank so I have room to pull the manacapuru x spawn. The ones in the community tank I'll leave alone for now. Both pair spawned on the intake tubes. That's funny since both tanks have slates and plants.
.
It's always where you don't want it....LOL.....

Well my Manacapuru X are now fully free swimming as of this morning. They spawned on the 13th. That's only 6 days. That was the quickest any on my spawns has gone from spawn to free swimming
You might have a few PB's in there??....possibly a gold too...Neil's original cross was with a PB ghost w/hidden gold.....I had just a few too....hopefully the ones that you got don't have the gold, I tried to look for signs of it, and select those without...but.....LOL

Well I'm probably going to hold on to this spawn for a while until I get a good idea of what they may be. I'm hoping I get some nice wild types out of them The two that spawned were the ghost type ones.
Very cool......look for the blue blushers +/+ S/S......a pair with punched up wild genes are to die for.....yep....I'm looking at some now ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D....gorgeous, black fins, nice blush. bluish cast body......I had a pair that laid close to 1000 eggs a spawn, I sold em all, time and again... ;D
I'm off now to finish a few things before nite nite ;D
The manacapuru x pair that I got from Jon as juvies and spawned on 9/22 now has free swimmers. Hopefully they wont eat them like they did the last time I left them with a spawn. They are in a quiet area in the house. I also have some fry from this pair that have been free swimming for 8 days. I'm raising those.

I love the red eyes with the stripe, rigid upright finage, red cap coming in round, thick bodies....gorgeous pair.
Thanks for breeding them Jon. This is my favorite pair.
Them are a pretty pair Willie. You'll get some good fry from them.
It was a good day for spawns, my St.Isabel/Rio Negro spawned. they'll parent raise so I don't have to tend to there eggs. The chocolate blues spawned. and I have a new pair pb clown and smokey paraiba. I pulled there spawn. The chocolate blues will get to keep there spawn. I have been trying to let them parent raise. they just don't seem to want to. They will tend to there eggs but end up eating them before they hatch.

Sounds like a very good day Scott. Good luck with those. Chocolate blues sound very enticing to me right now. LOL. ;D ;D ;D
Nice, Scott....more rain/storms til Tuesday....you'll need more tanks ;D
Thanks, I do need more tanks. I'm thinking two more 55s for grow out. I have a 20H I just need to get it going. I'm going to put the pb clown/smokey paraiba in there. I just can't keep all the fry. A lot of the time I just let the parents deal with them. This time seem different, The chocolate blues still have eggs. I think it might be a record for them. They must know I don't have the room for them. Also the pb clown/smokey paraiba eggs have hatched. That's great I was wondering about them.
I have a few Chocolate blues that I could let go if your interested in them Willie. I could bring them to the next swap. They are such beautiful angels.

This is the projection of the fry from this spawn. I can already see some of these developing especially the silver and the blushings.
# Phenotypes %
1 Silver 18.75 %
2 Blue silver 6.25 %
3 Ghost 37.5 %
4 Blue ghost 12.5 %
5 Blushing 18.75 %
6 Paraiba 6.25 %
That looks like about the right mix...I believe it's the ghosts that carry the pb mostly.

The picture was on the original post. It did not carry over. I'll have to find it. It is the ghost with the pb and this my ghost pair from that mana x spawn.
I have this miracle spawn. This female Cuipeau of mine has been laying every 9 days for like 6 weeks despite of all the stuff I've had going on in my tanks. She seems to have stolen the heart of my PB male. They are in a tank with 8 other Discus. This time, against all odds their eggs turned into wigglers. I have been doing 80% daily WC in that tank for over a week. The eggs (now wigglers) have been exposed to the air for about 10 minutes before I start refill. And I have only gotten eggs to hatch 2 other times in straight tap. This shouldn't be happening.
I wish this were a pair I wanted to work with. They have been so tenacious that they make me want to see what they might produce. Who knows? I might be surprised. But to my mind, no good can come of breeding a smallish poorly colored female Cuipeau to an average quality male PB.
Just did some water changes and then had some lunch. After lunch checked on my angels and found a surprise. Two of my Smokey Paraibas from Jon deposited a huge spawn (where else but on the intake tube) in my 75 gallon community tank.
This tank is populated with a couple of old timers (1 marble super veil & 1 gold veil ) and several other Paraiba siblings. There is also 1 Manacapura x in there.
Yes the tank is a little overstocked. At this time I'm not sure what I am going to do, however I am glad I have a pair of these. Now it's back to the drawing board since I have small set up. (only 11 tanks).
BTW my plats spawned again also.
Congrat's...can you swap out the filter intake tube with another one???
Yes I can. I can take the bottom half off and that will pick up about half the spawn. The parents can keep the other half. LOL
Love it when a plan comes together..... 8)
if you want another spawn to pull....lean a slate against the intake tube ;D

Well today was moving day for this spawn. I put them in a 29G for a couple of weeks. I counted a total of 217. That is quite a bit more than I expected since there were a lot of unfertilized eggs in this spawn. Oh well, I won't be pulling anything for a while. :o
Very nice, now starts the real fun ;D
Eggs being laid as I type. I'm so excited. I knew that it would happen by the way the female was acting. The male of the pair (the NADA 1st place winner) spends half his life staring at the cone. When the female of the pair (a home bred BD) starts fiirting, eggs are the result.
Please hope that nothing goes wrong with this spawn. I want fry from this male with all my heart.
I decided the day before yesterday that I would put this pair back in the community tank because nothing kept happening for the longest time. Then this morning, I could see the female showing affection to the male. He pecked on the cone hard, but was very slow and gentle with his lady.
It can be fun watching Discus pair up and seeing how they breed. The pairing up is always the same. The two start hanging out together. The breeding behavior is different with different pairs
It makes your day, doesn't it? ;D I like watching the courtships too. Each pair brings a uniqueness to the relationship ritual.
I have little hope now of this spawn working out, but I will pray for a miracle. The female has but down a huge batch of eggs. The male is affectionate to her but is just sitting back watching with his breeding tube nowhere in sight. Barring divine intervention my fish will break my heart once again.
Well, good luck...perhaps he'll get prodded by the female to join in...?
No. He showed no interest and the female is now eating the eggs. The pair will go into a community tank and I'll let them try again one day.
I have have plans up my sleeve for my Cuipeau pair. I want them to grow more before I let them raise any more fry. I will provide them with a love nest and if they spawn, try fostering the eggs out to a pair that I know has the desire for fry. It will be my first go at fostering fry.
Congrats! Best of luck with that spawn. ;D
Well, well, well...The Cuipeau's I put in the breeding are spwawning. The pair I want to foster the eggs to have eggs in the community tank. What luck! I will swap the pairs after the Cuipeau's are done with their fun. It will be cool watching what happens.
It'd be great if you can come up with a good foster pair....good luck ;D
I'd let the cuipeau raise their own, but I want them to grow more first. I've never fostered before so it will be fun to see what happens.
Good luck with them. I hope it works out for you.
Thanks. So far the foster pair is guarding them. I'll keep y'all updated.
The fosters are still caring for the eggs. I can see eye spots in them. Next step will be to see if they eat them when they start to wiggle (probably day after tomorrow). The big hurtle comes when the babies free swim.
Nice.....so far, so good...... ;D
We have wigglers this morning. Lots of them!

Yahooooooooooooo!!!!.... :D ;D :D ;D :D ;D
That's awesome Liz.
They're free swimming this morning. I caught dad snacking on some so I have removed him. Some are on mom but may are swimming around the tank seemingly lost. I lowered the water level and replaced the sponge with an air stone on low. That's all I can do. It's up to mom and the kids now.
Discus are likely like angel pairs, they'll snack on the weak ones that they don't like....nature's culling at work.... ;D...then again, there are some that just start chomping for no apparent reason. Good call on moving Dad, til you get a look at them better.
Oh, and congrats ;D
Attachment ain't going to happen, I'm afraid. I can't blame it on mom, that's for sure. Yesterday she had them all herded in a group in a corner of the tank. They couldn't have gotten a better opportunity to attach. It's something with the fry. Either they are weak or mentally retarded.
The St. Isabel/Rio Negro spawned today. I'm hoping they don't snack on them this time. I also had to move a chocolate blue spawn from the 2.5 today. It was getting hard to do there water changes without sucking up fry. there only two weeks old. I had to set up the 20g for them. There's around 200 fry in that spawn. I think I lost 5 eggs and no fry from this spawn. I need more tanks ;D At least two more 55 for grow out.

That's great Scott. Good luck with them. Who wouldn't want another two 55s for grow out. LOL ;D ;D ;D

Oh hell, make it 4 more 55's... 8)
I think I would be killed if I set up more than two 55 for now. I do need more grow out space. If my angels ever decided to parent raise all there spawns I would be in trouble.
Fake it, use big tubs...then mention that the fish are hard to see....hopefully, Michelle will say "Hon, why don't you just set up another couple of glass tanks, you'll see them better" ;D if not, white sand on the bottom will show them up...
good luck with the new spawn. Don't we all need more tank space. lol
So I have managed to kill off half the spawn. I'm not holding hope for the other half. I put the spawn in the new tank with a new heater. The temp when I put them was at 78. Today when I got up the temp was at 86 and half the spawn was dead. I did get the temp back down and the rest of the spawn did eat but there is still some die off. I guess I'll know tomorrow if the rest will make it.
That's too bad...I hate new heaters for that reason. Some you can calibrate, but that takes time..others seem like they've reached the set temp...then amble on several more deg's after you think they're set. Now I just set them up in the same size tank that they'll be used in, for a few days, til the 'new heater swings' stop.....
I lost a lot more fry. And the rest of them stopped eating. I guess the thing I learned is to set up new heaters before I put the fry in the tank. It's the little thing I take for granted. Like the heater will get to the temp set and stay there. At least the chocolate blue should be ready to spawn anyday now. It just sucks that I had to lose such a big spawn.
Rotten luck. Sorry, Scott.
Sorry about the bad luck Scott. Murphy's Law I guess.....
Dennis
Sorry you lost that spawn Scott. I'm sure you'll have much better luck with that chocolate blue.
So sorry Scott. Better luck next time;D

Thanks everyone, I do have some better news. The chocolate blues spawned today. I'm going to go pull this one and try not to kill them.

That's great, Best wishes to you.
Well as of this afternoon I have 3 pairs tending to spawns. They will be left to their devices as I am already fostering enough fry. Eggs from 2 pair (plat, mana x) have already hatched and I'm already seeing diminished numbers. The third pair (paraiba) is sharing a divided 55g with plats and the male did not cover much of their last spawn. In fact I am fostering some of their last spawn. At least they all will have a chance to practice their parenting skills and I will make room for any survivors.

busy busy busy, huh?..... :o
In my divided 55g a Plat pair and a Paraiba pair decided to spawn at the same time. Small spawn for the Plat pair, huge spawn for the Paraiba pair. Since I'm not pulling spawns these days it will interesting to see what happens when they go free swimming. The BN that I have sharing that tank was getting attacked by the male Plat (He is a mean SOB). I tried to rescue her but she scooted away too fast. LOL ;D
