Since i read abou this subject in a previous post and I am in the Pacific NW I am now looking for some alder trees. I was surprised to find out they were deciduous. i am pretty sure there are some in town because I have seen the cones here before.

Bill,
Did you find your alders?  If not, you should be looking around the creeks, rivers, marshes, and lakes in your area.

Have not had time yet Ron, but we have a lot of water and wet lands in town here. I will be keeping my eyes open for them.
We also have an alder street in town, but it is in a rather dry area.

Remember, you want the fallen, opened cones for the best success!

OK Ron. Not off the tree.

There is a swampy area about a mile from home. Maybe I can get there this weekend.

If you don't find any, there is a guy on aquabid that sells them...I think they are 50 for $5. PCdesigns is his screen name. He also has some OMG beautiful manzanita too. Found him on simplydiscus. He has his own website too.

I get alder cones on etsy.com. They're 200 for $8.00

How many do you use, in what sized tank, Pauline??...do you use a piece of panty hose to soak em, or toss em in..??...I use the panty hose, neater....I've even put them in the filter floss on the hob filter of the cory tanks...

I just tossed them around in my tanks. I like how they look. The shrimp really like them.

I learned one lesson with the fish tanks though.....they're a perfect size to get stuck in the syphon hose when cleaning the tanks. I don't always see them between and behind the plants and driftwood. Guess I'll start using your procedure Jon.
