Title: Devario pathirana
Post by: raven_wilde on January 02, 2014, 11:06:18 AM
Is anyone keeping Devario pathirana, http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/devario-pathirana/ (http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/devario-pathirana/)?

I've been contemplating getting involved in C.A.R.E.S and I notice that it is listed on their site as endangered: http://www.carespreservation.com/priority_list.html (http://www.carespreservation.com/priority_list.html)

I have seen them a lot in local stores, but never kept them (no space). They are nice looking.
They seem to do well in the stores.

I looked at the CARES site and noticed this:
Danio sp. Lagalla
Anyone heard of it before? I'm guessing its a synonym for something.

I sent Pete Cottle an email to see if he could enlighten us.....

QuoteHi Dennis
Never heard of it!! Tried googling the name Lagalla but that did not yield anything. (thinking it may be a place name which might give a clue)
I will contact Paul Loiselle as he seems to be a leading light of cares to see what he can find out.
All the best

                              Pete

I'll let you know what he finds out.

These fish are stunning to watch.  I can't imaging how cool a 6' planted tank would look with a school of about 50 of these fish swimming from end to end.  My fish range from around 2.5 inches to 3.5 inches.  Their tank has an HMF with a JetLifer running at full flow so there is a good bit of water movement in the tank.

They are nice, and with the bit longer length, I'll bet a big school would be spectacular to see, I agree  ;D

Those are really nice Dennis.  50 of those in a school would be absolutely stunning.  8) 8) 8)

Great pictures.

They have really unique coloring for the Devarios.

The closest thing to them in coloration is Devario auropurpureus (formerly Inlecypris auropurpureus). Its a skinner fish top to bottom and the gold color is in vertical stripes not irregular.

Thank you Bill.

I had some of the Inlecypris auropurpureus a couple of years ago and were they ever flighty.  Ended up putting them in a 55 with the Danio dangila and never did try to spawn them.....

Ever spawn the Danio dangila Dennis?
I have had some for two years or so.
They are big but don't look ready to spawn. Females not full of eggs.

Not yet.  Mine are big too, I though I'd set them up in a 40 breeder with some overhead lighting grid on the tank bottom.  Too many fish and not enough time.  I've got Danio feegradei I'd like to get set-up to spawn too.  It would be nice to get the Devario xyrops to spawn again too.  I don't think they have ever been imported to this country, kinda like the Danio meghalayensis.
