Title: Oh my...
Post by: LizStreithorst on June 02, 2017, 03:29:31 PM
I've never forgotten about the Fiat 500.  There's one in Hattiesburg.  It's not an Abarth, but really. what does an old lady like me need with a sports car?  I think I go visit it tomorrow after work.  They're asking 12,400.  If I like the way it drives and handles I'm afraid I might take the plunge.  Charlotte will be totally pissed.  https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/inventorylisting/viewDetailsFilterViewInventoryListing.action?entitySelectingHelper.selectedEntity=m98&radius=150&zip=39459&trimNames=NONE_NONE&trimLevelNames=NONE_NONE&colors=NONE_NONE&utm_term=2017-06-02&utm_campaign=1-1&utm_medium=email&utm_source=dealfinderSubscription&utm_content=bodySampleListingsViewDetailsCTA#listing=176856633

That is the instant market value (whatever that means)  Their asking price is 12,400.  I will pay $10,000, period.  Folks in my neck of the woods aren't hot for this car.  They will consider it small, strange, and foreign.  It will be hard to sell.  If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

I was thinking of financing part of it so that I wouldn't deplete the money that I'm not allowed to touch by close to half.  But I spoke to my neighbor Judy about it because she has a good head on her shoulders while I mostly follow my heart.  She and I are of the same mind.  If she buys something she wants to own it.  She doesn't want it to be partly hers until it's paid off.  When I told her that it was a 2013 with under 17,000 miles she said that I should be careful that the odometer wasn't set back.  The only way I know to tell is too look at the odometer and see if the numbers line up correctly.  I'm getting all excited but I will be very careful.  If I drive it and like it I may insist on driving it for a couple of days so I can take it to Chip for professional evaluation.

As far as Charlotte, she will be jealous of a pretty, sexy, unusual car at first. She has to come to the realization that she is old, and shit breaks when you're old even when you do your best to be strong.  A good reliable car is in her future even if it turns out not to be this one.  I will do my best to find her a stall mate that she can think well of.  She's not stupid, she'll figure out that she will always be my favorite.

I bought a lot of used cars in my time. Had pretty good luck overall.  But I always wondered why the previous owner would get rid of the car.  Can't conceive of someone getting rid of a perfectly good car for no reason.  All the ones I ever traded in were just about on their last legs.

The dealership emailed me back.  The guy said that it was a local trade-in that they got in last week, and it was on sale for $9,988. plus tax and title.  I wanted to go see it this afternoon but it's been pouring down rain since early this morning.  I'll wait until Monday.

I'm sure that this car will be hard for them to sell.  It's way too unconventional for this area, plus it's a standard which nobody thinks is a good thing but me.

You can also ask the dealer for a CarFax on it or do it yourself but you need the VIN. That will tell you if it has ever been in and accident and the correct mileage.

I did ask the dealer to email me the CarFax but he didn't.  The vin is listed so I checked it myself.  No report is available for that vin.  I was under the impression that to be listed on Car Gurus a vehicle had to have a CarFax but I could be mistaken.  I'm a bit worried about the odometer having been set back.  It's not often you find a 2013 model with under 17,000 miles.

When I got our 2013 Escape last Sept. it had just 12,000 mi on it.  Had been a company car that wasn't used much.  My last car was 2 yrs old. with 20,000 mi, and had been an Enterprise rental.  I hope you get it Liz!

24 miles round trip 5 days a week.  I think that comes out to around 5,000 miles a year.  But I don't do math so I could be wrong.

The newer cars it is hard to turn miles back sometimes they would just disconnect the speedo from the transmission look under car and see if there are wrench marks on speedo cable. If it has a old type odometer a rap on top of dashboard above odometer the numbers will move if the odometer was tampered with. I once was looking at a truck that said 17000 on speedo but oil change sticker said 45500 it was on the door jamb. The truck was clean but high miles

Pop's '99 S-10 had 34000 miles on it when I started driving it a couple years ago.    ;)

With the new cars mileage is not such a big deal as it was back-in-the-day.  Tell 'em you want an extended test drive and have Chip put it on the rack and give it the once over.   2c2

I'm very nervous thinking about perhaps buying this car.  I know that I will do it all wrong.  If I like it, I'm not supposed offer them $10,000 cash including tax and title and leave it up to them to take it or leave it.  I never bargain.  I'm hate and I suck at it.  If the car is what they say it's well worth that much.

I know that it is very unlikely that there is anyone else interested in this car.  That is my only bargaining point and I will keep it to myself as not to show my hand.  I must remember that I've lived without a Fiat 500 for my entire life, and just because the car turns me on no end I can't let on.

And here I was thinking a multi-talented lady like yourself would be a world class haggler.   huh

I taught both of my kids, at a very young age, how to haggle at this yearly "computer fest" in Dayton Ohio.  It was like a computer flea market and the kids would both have a list of things they wanted.  I'd give them not quite enough money to get the stuff, and tell they not to pay the asking price to the sellers if they wanted to get everything on their lists.

My son got so good at it, that it was almost shameful.....  LOL

I hate it.  I won't haggle.  When people try to haggle with me about my grooming price, they usually say that so and so will do it for so much less I tell them, "hey, that's a good price".  That sends them on their way.  Heck, I lived in Mexico where haggling is a part of life and I still can't do it.  It's just not my style.  My style is to figure out how much something is worth to me and say, "take it or leave it".

If $10,000 cash is not good enough for them, I'm not meant to have the car and that will be that.

Mother, you poor dear.  I'm a better friend than you think.  I understand that you need to buy something younger that won't have problems due to old age.  You know what a PITA getting old is and that there's no such thing as getting young again huh.

I have faith that you will make the right decision.  Personally, I would like to see you in an Abarth, but if you had an Abarth you would ride the winding country roads too fast and end up putting it into a ditch or worse.  That wouldn't be any good for either or us.

He said it was on sale for $9,988 when he emailed me after I asked to see the CarFax.  Tax and title takes it up to $10,863.85.  If I like the car and want to buy it they will have to eat $863.85.

Who knows, if this doesn't work, I might stumble upon an Abarth and wrap myself around a tree, or worse.  Charlotte knows me better than I thought.

I got there and it was an automatic.  They have updated the information on CarGurus since I told the guy that it was an automatic.  It even said 5 speed manual on the window sticker.

I was disappointed.  Charlotte thinks that I should buy it.  I drove in to Ellisville and talked to chip.  Chip says that I should go back and buy it.  He said that with the kind of driving I do an automatic is fine.  He's right, I guess.  Also, it would be nice to have an automatic if I were to fall and break my left leg.  I'm thinking about it...

The little care is as cute as a button.  First it was listed as being blue.  Later they changed it to green.  In the picture it looks grey.  I wasn't sure what to expect, but I spotted it right away.  It's a light green like the one in this picture.  It's not a color that would appeal to a man, but I find it adorable.  I need time to think.

I emailed the guy and asked him if I could drive it to Chip.  Chip is already in favor of me buying this car that he was once strongly against.  He must have researched it behind my back.  The only thing he doesn't like about the car now is that a normal mechanic can only read the code.  They can't see data.  Only a Fiat dealer can see the data.  He wants to see the data.  I don't speak that language wfwf

Driving to Ellisville and back will give me a good feeling of it's ride and handling.  It's been a long time since I've driven a FWD.  I need to get used to it again.  Besides, Chip is a buddy.  He's the one whose opinion I most trust.

It's not like it's a new car.....  if you drive it a couple of days, and put a couple hundred miles on it, it won't make any difference in the re-sale value.

He said that I could take it to Chip, all he would need is a copy of my driver's license.  Chip is looking forward to giving it his blessing.  I can't do it today.  It's raining some but there's no telling when the sky might open up like it did last night.  I don't want to be caught in a car that I don't own when the sky lets loose a blinding downpour.

I called the folks who have the money I'm not allowed to touch and told them to transfer it to my bank account.  It will take between 48 and 72 hrs.  The die has been cast.

Yup, 10.5 gallons.  That's OK.  It gets 40 something MPG.

I don't have it home yet.  I have to wait for the money to be transferred which will be either tomorrow or the day after.  But my offer of $10,000 cash was accepted, although he made me sweat a bit before he gave me his answer.  When he came back he didn't dick around with me.  He said he'd do it.  The papers have been signed.  The deal is done.

I don't know how fast it will go but it has way more pep than I expected.  Driving to Chip's I never got out of 5th gear.  At 65 mph the rpm's were only 2500 and I 6th gear left to go.  The speedo goes up to 140 and I suppose it might get there  in it's own sweet time on a very long, flat, straight, well paved road lol.  It had noticable torque power on downshift.  I was impressed.  I don't need to build up a head of steam to pass on a 2 lane highway.

Chip loved it.  BJ loved it, too.  The guy from AutoZone who takes parts to Chip saw it and he loves it too.  Chip plugged in the computer thing to see if he could read data.  He could!  With the newer year models only a Fiat dealer can read data.  He looked at what the data told him and said, "buy it".  BJ took it for a drive and he was impressed.  His daughter is hot for a Mini Cooper.  I told him to do some research like I did.  Everyone says the Fiat is a well built car.  They don't say that about the Mini.

When my heart gets together with my head on equal terms the outcome is always satisfying.  My heart has wanted one of these Fiat 500's since Charlotte's heart attack.  My silly heart wanted the Abarth version.  My heart made me come to within a hair's breath of buying it but my little head put in it's two cents and stopped me.  This time both my parts are delighted with my decision.

I stopped by Chip's and asked him if his brother could make the Fiat glow.  He looked at her finish and said yes, but Shiny man won't be around for 5 weeks.  That's OK, I can wait.

While I was there he suggested the name Peamite.  I think I like that better than Teenie Greenie.  The car seemed to like the sound of it, too.

My shiny new toy is 43 years old I'll have you know.  Traded my '62 Chevy II drag car for it back in the 70's.  LOL

Yep I'd rather shine up an old toy than get a new one. Problem is I spend 90% of my time looking for tools... which is my own fault.

I love driving her but to be honest I've spent more time admiring her and showing her off.  Everyone is so happy for me.  Everyone loves her style.  I may drive her to Hattiesburg tomorrow to show her off to my Veterinarian and the owners of my LFS.  I'll take the scenic route to the vet's.  Nice empty country roads...I'm going to buy her a vanity tag with her name on it.  It will say PEAMITE.

Speaking of oil, I don't know if the dealership changed the oil and filter.  The oil looks clean.  I don't know what kind of oil that was used in her either.  There's not a sticker anywhere.  Should I have it changed?

..If you don't know, then yes I would.....then you'll have a point where you know when it was changed......

here's an answer, and a Fiat 500 forum to boot  |^|

+1 on the oil change.  I'd use the oil type and weight that the owners manual calls for.

The sound is incredable.  This tiny little thing has 6 speakers!!!!

I got a cover for the back.  A customer of mine showed me the one that she bought for her car.  The junk store on the corner had them for $8.  It was the first thing I've seen worth buying at that place.  It's a really well made, clean staying cover.  While I was there I saw bucket seat covers.  I only bought one for the passenger seat where small dogs ride because I didn't think that it would look good.  It looks good!  I'll buy another for the driver's seat tomorrow.  It's not that my ass is dirty.  It's that the little dogs get in from my side and they leave their dusty foot prints on the seat.

...good idea.....you can always change a stained seat cover.......not so much with the seat itself.... 8)

Two customers asked about the Fiat without prompting today!  I went to the courthouse and applied for a vanity tag with her name on it.

Now that the die has been cast, do y'all think that the name Peamite suites her?  I asked for other name suggestions on Simply.  My horticulturist friend much prefers "Teenie Greenie, but it's not his car and Teenie Greenie doesn't fit on the tag which only allows 7 letters.  The Simply folks suggested things like JuneBug and SweetPea but I found those names, while good, were not appropriate names for a car belonging to a Mama Bear.  The car is cute enough without a sickeningly cute name, don't you agree?  PEAMITE suggests green and small.  The mite part suggests mighty.

If you like it, I give all the credit to Chip.  If not, blame it on me.  I'm the one who chose it from one of several names.  I can't wait to drive to Chip's when the tag comes in.  I'll make him stop what he's doing and come out and look at it.  It will make him smile.

That's a killer name but I can't make it work even by shortening it GRNMUSE.  Besides, naming her Green Muse would hurt Charlotte's feelings.  She's been very kind about this so far.  I don't want to push it.  I may be smitten, but Charlotte is my main squeeze.

I took 4 boxes of fish to Hattiesbug  I can fit 6 fish boxes in the back.  If I used the passenger seat she would carry 2 more.  Not bad for a teenie weenie car.
