I usually check the 'My Messages' every time I check in. or refresh the page.....how does everyone else do it???.....just curious...

I usually get prompted when I log in if I have messages. If I'm already online and I am expecting a message then I will manually check.

I just glance up at "my messages" at the top of the page. It indicates whether or not I have a message.
