THE LOUNGE / Good Friday
Last post by wsantia1 - March 29, 2024, 05:34:32 AM
Good morning everyone. Hopefully you are all well. All is good here. We have been rained on for most of the past week and today we finally get a break as the as it will be sunny with the high temp getting into the high 50s. With that being said it is only 38 degrees at the moment.

When I was growing up Good Friday was a big deal for my family. We had to go to church and we couldn't eat any meat on GF and there were exceptions to that. To this day I usually try not to eat meat but I usually fail. Since my stomach has been bothering me for a few days I am more conscious of what I am eating so I might actually succeed this time. ;D

I won't be doing much today except fishroom work but I need to do some yard work soon. With all of the rain we have gotten the weeds have gotten out of control and the fall cleanup by our landscapers will not begin until Tuesday.

Wishing you all a great day and I'll peek in later to see if anything is going on in your neck of the woods.

Hi Barb, no rain here, but it's been a chilly upper 40's kind of day.

Loaded up some tools and headed out to Mom's this morning. She will be back from Florida in about 6 weeks and there are some things I'd like to get done at her place before she gets back.

Left her place around noon and came home to work on one of the bikes. It had an issue with the ignition system, but it's all good now.

They are calling for mid 60's with sun tomorrow so I'm hoping to take the bike and hit the hardware stores looking for some faucet parts I need to complete repairs out at Mom's.

Going to do a bit of studying and then some reading before calling it a day. One of my old work mates gave me the book, "Failure Is Not An Option". It's an interesting book by Gene Kranz, the former Flight Director at NASA.

Have a good evening all!

Well, it has been raining non stop for about 24 hrs!  I looked at radar awhile ago and this storm is from FL all the way up the east coast into Canada!  But should be sunny here by tomorrow and all weekend.  Ron, if you see this I hope you are home and feeling better.  Do you have food poisoning?  I am so familiar with that issue.  Hope you all have a good rest of Thursday, I am indoors with my sickly cat on my lap. Even when I want to be up doing other things, I sit so she can be on my lap.  Don't know how much longer I will have her.  So I do all I can to keep her happy. She is deaf now and partially blind too.

Hi gang!

Dennis, that's great. I didn't know there was that type of milling equipment available! Way cool! I agree with the ladies! Pics of the furniture please.

Barb, go here: https://kauaicoffee.com/pages/rewards?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIw9LDzZCWhQMVXAGtBh3KrQ2cEAAYASAEEgKbG_D_BwE

I wish I knew of something that would help you Liz. Hopefully it is just temporary.

I've had a couple days and nights here with digestive problems, so we've decided to cut out trip short by 2 days. We're flying home tomorrow at 0-dark-30 hours. If I'm gonna be sick it might as well be at home. We've enjoyed the things we've done under these circumstances.

Dennis, I thought you went to Alaska and bought a sawmill!!!  Then I looked at your pics and see it is a piece of equipment, haha.  How great to mill your own trees and then make furniture from it, that is wonderful!  Liz, I agree we need pics of what he makes.  Glad you are having a nice greening up early Spring. Here too, and even though it has been cold lately at night, none of the new leaves have turned black, like the last 2 yrs.  Hoping you can walk Liz, even if slowly and with a walker or cane! Ron, now I want some Kauai coffee, and not 10%. Wonder where I can find the real thing?

That's wonderful news, Dennis.  That job was taking too much out of you.

The white oak is beautiful.  I understand that Walnut is a way harder wood, and is way harder to work with.  But I could easily be mistaken.  Making furniture is even more difficult.  I know it will be a long time before you will have a piece to show, but I want to see pics of the pieces you make.

Ron, I wish I could be with you having fun.

Barb, I'm so sorry that you have something done that you can't afford.  The fact that it's dental makes it worse, especially for you with your fear of dental work.  I have a dentist appointment that I'm looking forward to on Monday the 7th of April.  This was supposed to have happened weeks ago, but that time the bottom wax teeth didn't fit comfortably against my gums.  Surely. this time it will fit comfortably.  After that, it will only be a few more weeks before I have teeth.  The dentist warned me at the first appointment that it would take forever and that toward the end patients get antsy and call all the time complaining.  I'm not doing that.  Instead, I'm getting antsy and complaining to my friends. lol

I love this time of year.  It's warm and everything is it's own beautiful shade of green.  It feels life has been renewed.

I'm fine emotionally.  Physically I've taken another step toward disability.  I'm having a hard time walking.  It's been this way for severeal days in a row so although I hope it is temporary, I feer that it is not.

Rain water is a great idea Barb.  I used to tell the guys at the club the reason I could get so many fish to spawn was because of using nature's finest rain water.  ;)

Good to hear you are having a great time Ron!  Thanks for sharing with us.  |^|  I'm particularly fond of coffee grown in Kenya. Very rich and smooth...

Well it's just been over 3 weeks since I stopped working at Home Depot.  I'm feeling so much better now.

One of my indicators that I was heading down hill was the fact that I could no longer get my big chainsaw started.  That changed yesterday!

You see, I've had this dream of building some furniture and other things from the trees growing on my property.  With that in mind, I purchased a large chainsaw and Alaskan sawmill about a year ago.

I've got a massive walnut tree that would make some beautiful boards, but I thought I should get some experience before trying to work with the walnut. So I started milling lumber from a down white oak last spring. Things were going great until I got side tracked with some health issues.

The saw fits into this fixture called an Alaskan Sawmill and it allows you to mill boards by cutting trees long ways instead of cross cuts like you normally do.

I cut several longs into boards with good success before trying to cut some short boards from the stump.

If the oak boards are any indicator, the walnut should mill into some fantastic lumber...

Being strong enough to get the big saw running yesterday, just made my day!  I cut enough fire wood to clear out all the old gas in the saw and should be all set to start milling again.  ;)

Aloha Barb! Et Al!

Referring to your dental issues and your outlook on your condition; I'm a firm believer that no matter how rough your situation is, there's always someone that has it worse. Everything is relative to the person's own perspective. It's the, "I complained about not having shoes until I met a man with no feet", thing.

We went on a coffee plantation tour today. Kauai Coffee is the largest coffee grower in the US. They have 4 million trees!!! They plant, cultivate, grow, harvest, dry, roast and package every coffee bean right here on their plantation. It's amazing to see the vast orchards. The only thing that's not done here is decaffeinating. They send it out to to a company that uses the Swiss Water method which leaves the coffee 99% decaffeinated. Other methods leave the coffee 95% decaffed. Theirs is 100% Kauai grown coffee. Most of what we see in our stores that say "Kauai Coffee" only have about 10% Kauai coffee in it the package. That's today's lesson folks! ☕️☕️☕️

Not sure what we'll be doing tomorrow so stay tuned. Wishing a good day to all of you. Aloha!
