I understand that there was an exceptionally good wild crop this year.  I have never tasted one but word is that they are to die for.

They are great. I par boil them and fry them in butter.  If I ever get enough of them.  Some years I find lots and some years not a one.  It won't be until mid may til they come out around here.

I once had some growing out of a pile of cedar wood mulch that was sitting in the driveway for a few months.
There is supposed to be some link between particular mushrooms and trees.

The best places to look for them are under dead trees with the bark still on.  Also find them in woods a lot.  Yes they seem to have an affinity for wood.

....and folks that treasure the morels, guard their locations for picking closely.....

you betcha! Closest guarded secret there is.  There aren't nearly enough to go around, so any that someone else gets that means less for me.  People in Alaska take their two week vacation to pick morels, and they sell them for some ridiculous price like about $25 a pound.
