Well after about 6 hours of cleaning spread out over the past 2 days, I've uncovered the bikes!!!

I thought that you were just kidding when that you would have to dig for days to find them.  What are they each?  Are they old.  Don't suppose you own you own one of those BMW's with the cylinders that come out the side?  I always thought they were a cool looking touring bike.

The blue one started out as a 550cc, but when we modified it for drag racing we punched it out quite a bit.  It is a 1974 model.

The silver one is 1100cc.  Terri and I found out very quickly that the small one just wouldn't cut it for both of us to travel any distance on.  It is a 1979 model.  In 80 - 81 we put over 15000 miles on it.

I've had my eye on a racy bright red BMW over in Columbus.  I'd love to have it, but I need to get these back on the road first.  They have been in storage in Pop's garage since late fall 1987.

Oh my word, you are going to have a blast getting them going.  What is the model of the racy bright red BMW?  I haven't seen a European bike down here for as long as I can remember.  It's all either Harley's or something Japanese, usually Honda's.

It's an R100S Liz.  It's an older model too, 1977.  Built to last and travel mile after mile.....

Yeah, mine too Liz.

That silver 6 cylinder, dual overhead cam, 24 valve Honda does too.  Lots of good memories with it, and it will really fly... one up or two!!!

About the only down-side to it is that it could be problematic getting it worked on far from home.  I guess that's what U-Haul is for!   ;D

OMG is't a six?  Yes it could haul a u-haul full of tools and parts, but that takes all the fun out of it huh

LOL  No, I mean, if worst came to worst and I couldn't get it repaired out on the road somewhere, I'd rent a U-Haul and haul it home.

Knock on wood, it has never given me any trouble in the past.  I like to do my own maintenance and I always made sure it was in good working order before going on a trip.

It's forecast to be almost 60 here over the weekend.  With a bit of luck, I'll have a clear path by then and can roll them both outside for a good wash while the weather is nice.

Pop's garage is long over-due for a clean up.  I've been telling Mom I'd get to it ever since he passed.  She will certainly be surprised when she gets back from Florida.  It will make a nice place to restore the bikes too.  It's 42 feet deep, built into the side of a hill behind the house, and 27 feet wide.  It's got a 50000 btu furnace to warm it up in the winter.  Being half buried, it doesn't take much to keep it warm.

You have it made!  Snap a pic of it after you give it it's first bath.  I want to see what it looks like.

Wherever they were from they were greedy and tasteless.  If I had something that old in mint condition I would dote on it.  Look at all I've done for Charlotte and she's young in comparison.

When my uncle Al died he had a 55 Chevy. My aunt asked if anybody wanted anything. I said I wanted the 55. His son, my cousin, said he wanted it. I thought Okay it was his dads. You guessed it. He sold it.

I learned to drive on a 55 Chevy...3 in the tree...2-tone tan and white....It was a wonderful car...It was the first brand new car Dad had ever bought...We went to Calico Rock, Arkansas to visit my Mom's family and he and Mr. King (the dealer in town) drove somewhere to pick it up and brought it back to my Aunt's home and they had a rattlesnake in the trunk that they had run over....I was probably about 10 at the time... I can still remember the new car smell that first time...we went home in it to Roanoke, VA....

WOW...! You folks really trigger some good memories for me on this forum...! :)

I had a Chevy II. First car I ever bought brand new.  Paid $2200 for it.  It even was famous, with its picture in the paper.  Where I worked at the time was next to a run down part of Milwaukee.  I always parked on the street.  One day the local newspaper did a big article on all the dilapidated homes in the area, complete with pictures. And there was my little Chevy II dead center and prominent.

All cleared out around the bikes!  I've got about a month's worth of trash pickup to start staging now.  Big pile of scrap iron too.  Probably ten or twenty dollars worth of pop cans.  The aluminum should cover the furnace fuel oil.

A half day tomorrow, and I should be all set for a wash outside on Saturday.  Need to remember to take a tire guage with me in the morning to air up the tires before moving them out side.

I'm starting to get excited about this..... can you tell  LOL

Thank you Jon.  Yeah, no way am I going to go anywhere on tires that are 30+ years old.  Once I get them in running condition, I'll load 'em up on the trailer and take them in for some new tires.

My Dad came home one day with a '64 Thunderbird. Candy Apple Red, he said it was. It had up & down window buttons and all of us kids were sitting in the car making the windows go up and down. He bought it on a whim and my Mom was mad about it ... we only had it for a year or so.

Well, back from Mom's.  Got both the bikes washed.  I didn't do a really thorough job, I was just trying to get the grim off before starting to work on them.  None?the?less they cleaned up pretty well.

I bet the tires on the 550 don't have 1000 miles on them.  As I recall, we put new rubber on it and Terri was going to start riding on her own.

It's gonna take a lot of work getting these two back on the road.  I'll probably start with the 550 as it looks to be the quickest to get going.

I hope you're right!  I need to get them both a new battery before they would run.  They aren't like some of my way old bikes that had a mag and would fire without a battery.

I'll probably do that with the 550 next week.  Get some fresh gas and wash out the tank, then trickle some into the carbs and see if the gaskets will swell back up and seal.  The 550 has a kick start so I know it turns over just fine...  the CBX doesn't have a kick start.

The 550 also only has a disc brake on the front while the CBX has them front and rear.  I know they all need tore down and cleaned up before they will operate correctly.

Thanks Liz.  I think they look really good for being 40+ years old.  That's probably a lot to do with Pop's garage bing half in the hill out back.  It doesn't get too hot in the summer, and it doesn't get too cold in the winter.  LOL  The Goldilocks effect.   |^|
