Well, well, well....lookee here ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D.....congrat's.....
(and on the filter intake, of course ;D )
Congratulations Greg. Choosing odd spawning locations may just be a Dantum characteristic. Mine usually choose the wall.
Are you going to pull the eggs or leave them with the parents?
Thanks Jon and Pauline.Yeah ,with 2 slates in the tank, pulled the eggs after 5 1/2 hours so they could practice fanning.
Male from Jon and female from Mike T.
9 hours and no white eggs,YET.
Congrats Greg. Wish you much success with these. I'm sure you'll keep us all posted. ;D ;D ;D
Congrats
How are they doing today Greg?

Nice sized spawn. Great stuff.
Guessing about 50 bad eggs now, >:( .But have wigglers, knocked some off while trying to remove the bad eggs.Got all of them off the tube, but still have to clean up the bad ones that fell to the bottom.

I think you'll find every fish that comes from that spawn will be carbon copies of each other. Nothing but Albino Dantums... :)

That's what i'm hoping for,let me add something if i choose to.NOT try to breed it out of them.
More eggs.

Greg's "White House"! Congrats again. Looks like they're on a roll. You must be very happy.
....very nice, they're settling in to rhythm......sweeeet ;D
Congrats on the continuing success with your Albino Dantums.
Thanks Pauline and Scott, very happy with the spawns. Now comes maybe the hardest part, making sure they have good ventrals,i would be crushed if they all end up with stubs.
...Is the bottom of the fry tank painted?....if not, you can sprinkle a little gravel down to cut the reflection out...it'll help keep them from hovering, etc...also, a couple BN fry will keep it cleaner...
I still have them in a specimen container, hanging inside the tank.About 75% covered, they actully gather at the bright end, also an air stone on that end with a few bubbles coming up.They like the current, seems to be keeping them off the bottom some of the time.
That'll work.....they'll need a bigger tank soon tho...what's next?..a fiver or a ten??
I was thinking about a marina hang on breeder box,or two.Might have to transfer them to the second one to clean the other, but that might be a big PITA.
But maybe would be better off with a 5 gallon, which i don't have.May have to try a 10,if they have to much of a hard time finding the food i will have to go smaller.
There's always a 2 1/2...or you can partition a ten, and adjust it as they grow?.....Sterilite plastic trays/boxes can be found in various unique sizes....check out Wally World, they have a massive assortment....
Greg I got my Dantums when they were quite small. I was concerned about their ventrals as they weren't uniform lengths on all of them. I asked David about it and he said not too worry, they're very young and will turn out perfect. I'm happy to say he was right. I'm not "a breeder" and hadn't previously seen that on the few spawns here.
I don't know if that's unusual or not but just wanted to give you a heads up....just in case.
Pauline, with some 'weaker' phenotype spawns, the fry tend to be bottom dwellers, some even scooting along the bottom...that's why they are called 'sliders' ...this causes the ventrals to wear down during development....also, the exposure to added bacteria on the bottom doesn't help any either....Plat pearl scales are famous for this..and a few other 'pearls' as well....with the Albino's bad sight too..they tend to roam low in the water column....Greg's fry being in the breeder box, and liking the air flow helps immensely in keeping them up.....if the ventrals don't become 'nubs', or splayed, they should eventually grow normally...
Thanks Jon. Interesting info. You had told me about "knuckling" on ventrals awhile back. This other is new for me.
I noticed the short ventrals on yours Pauline when you got them, and also from other pics online. But yours turned out great, thought maybe they just took longer to develope on the Dantums, which doesn't seem likely since they have extra long ventrals as adults.
Here's how i have them setup in the container, seems to be working, want to repeat it when i move them to something larger.

Congrats Greg. ;D
Thanks Pauline and Willie.
It was a lot of work, and i'm ALMOST up to raising another batch. :)
Greg....have you ever raised albino spawns in the past.

Greg....have you ever raised albino spawns in the past.
I tried, the plats and pinoys couldn't have been a bigger dissaster.Easily 2000+ albino fry and they ALL died from starvation, could not get them to feed,or at least not enough to survive. All the albinos were from het albino pairs,so propably 10,000 total fry.
I did manage to raise about 30-35 het pb albinos, until i realized none of them had ventrals, almost made me sick when i had to pitch them.
I did raise a FEW golds, including some veils, and they had nice ventrals.
Must have been an accident. :)
Well the success you had with these must have made all the hard work worth it.
Greg in a previous exchange we talked about the short ventrals my Dantums had in the beginning. So you don't have to worry if yours start out a little odd here's what they look like today:

I should have some available soon.
Might also be interested in trading some for tank raised.
