When I spawned lots of Cory catfish I would add water that was ten degrees cooler. They did back flips.

Nice close-ups Dennis.
What kind of camera/lens are you using?
Title: Re: Cold water change...
Post by: BallAquatics on December 06, 2013, 08:48:49 PM
Thanks Bill.  Just the standard lens on my Cannon S3 IS.  It has a "Super" macro setting for getting super close-up shots.  I have a 200mm macro lens that I sometimes use too.  I'll give it a try tomorrow and see what it produces.

As my eye sight goes, I find it harder and harder to focus the camera for super clear shots.  Getting old sucks, but it beats the alternative.

They are tiny, aren't they?...that's why I tell folks don't suck out all the mulm unless you check it real well, before and after....I cleaned the 2 1/2 and we found about 6 little ones in the small pail that I was using......and I was using a rigid tube w/air line.

great vid, Dennis....what are you feeding?

I'll probably go with my standard green water, golden pearls, monia, bbs, daphnia schedule.  They will likely start foraging today.

The tank has some rather course gravel that has a bounty of micro-fauna living there.

Well the troops were out in force today.

My poor camera is dying a slow death.  Every time I turn it on anymore it gives me a lens error message and I have to work with it for about 15 minutes to get it to start.  Sounds like I may be camera shopping soon.

Decide how much you want to spend and what you want to use it for first.
Then decide if you want something simple to use or if you want to mess around a lot with the settings.

This will narrow things down a lot.

Two places around here to go and check out cameras in person are Best Buy and Shutterbug.

Thanks folks.  Taking photos of these tiny creatures is just another enjoyable facet of the hobby.  Back when I could see good, and kept BIG fish, I never bothered with taking photos.  I think it was the delicate little dwarf shrimp that really got me interested.

My new, used camera, should be here next Thursday.  I got a great deal on the big brother to the model I currently own.  It's got a few more mega-pixels and a hot-shoe for a remote flash.  Other than that, it's pretty much the same as what I'm used to.

When I started looking, I noticed that many of the new cameras use a special rechargeable battery.  I wanted something that will use my AA rechargeable batteries.

Mine, tho not 'state of the art'..has a small charging station for the small/flat battery...it's great...but my Kodak used the AA rechargeable battery....it was nice too....

What make/model did are you getting???
Title: Re: Cold water change...
Post by: BallAquatics on December 14, 2013, 06:40:40 PM
It's another Cannon, the model S5 IS.  It is a point-and-shoot camera when set to "auto", but you can also adjust everything manually, (F-stop, ISO, shutter speed, etc).  It has macro and super macro setting that will allow you to focus down to 0 distance from the lens.  Basically, it's just like my failing camera, except the top-of-the-line model.  More mega-pixels & the remote flash capability.

The feature it has that I'm really excited about is the fact that it has a hot-shoe like an SLR type camera.  Using this I can attach a remote flash unit and with a bit of luck start capturing some cool shots of fast moving Danios.   ;D ;D ;D

I have quite a few very nice rechargeable AA batteries and charger that I use in my IT work, so I'd really like to get double duty from them rather than investing in yet another battery type.

Just in time for Christmas shots of the grand kids too.   ;)

Nice...on 'auto' is the shutter speed fast enough to catch the fast movers??...

Most of the time.  This is where putting the flash on top of the tank firing down into the water will come in handy...  no more glare from the glass reflecting the built-in flash.

I think I have lost all of mine.   :(

I think next time I'm going to set-up a bare bottom tank to spawn the fish in.  Yes, they are albino Corydoras aeneus.  I was trying to chat with a friend at the GCAS auction and bid all at once....  I thought the auction was for albino busy nose plecos.  We were so busy talking I didn't even give them the once over after winning the auction - just strait into the cooler.  Imagine my surprise when I was unpacking my bounty back at home!!!

I've never really been a cory fan, but these have started to grow on me.  They seem so happy all the time.  Eager little eaters, and they get so excited when I give them frozen blood worms.  This could be the start of something.....

That's too bad, about losing them...keep looking, there may be a survivor, or two...?
I roll the eggs off into a small paper cup, you'll get the hang of it, and put them in a 2 1/2 gal to raise...LOL..eggs are really sticky....

Not the best pics..but they do show most of them....the lump on the bottom is a swarm of Walter worms...they snack on them during the day....I count about 29-30..not that many showing in the pics tho

Thanks Pauline, it's hard lessons learned when dealing with living creatures.  I'm going to get Jon to tutor me on all things spawning Corydoras catfish!

Yours are looking great Jon.  From what I've read, they grown very quickly.

Post by: Mugwump on December 17, 2013, 12:34:55 PM
Yes, fairly quick...I'll move them from here, in a few days, to a 10gal with small BN fry.....they'll out grow the BN fry fast....then on to a bigger tank....the previous 15 ,or so, are the ones you now see in the new 125 set up....they're about 1 1/2 mos. old......these will likely join them in a couple/few weeks???...they'll love that sand for foraging, and really take off growing.... ;D Most of these will end up spread around the room, with the older retiree's going to the 110 gal..or with mellow angel pairs.

Sorrry to hear about the loss Dennis. I was looking forward to more pictures too. Your so good at capturing the details of such small fry. Jon yours are looking good. Maybe one day I'll try and breed my albino cories. I don't have a clue what they need.

Well today I noticed 14 Cory eggs in my 12 gallon acrylic tank that currently houses 2 albino aeneus, 1 panda and 1 sterbai cories along with 15 Mana x that are 10 days old.

The eggs were scattered along the front of the glass.  I took a picture of a 4 egg cluster.  I don't know which cory laid the eggs and I may have some hybrid thing going on but I'll get to the bottom of it.

This is really a QT tank that I never pulled the cories from.  They are doing quite well feeding on cory pellets and bbs.

Sorry for the lousy picture. LOL ;D

I am not expecting anything.  I was just surprised.  Everything is being well fed in that tank so the fish may not have an appetite for eggs. LOL
