These are called linguistic "regionalisms".

?Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ?Wow! What a Ride!? ~ Hunter S. Thompson

That was great.  I know that I often use regionalisms when I write.  Some of the ones they say are used in the south I have never heard and I have listened to people from all different walks of life.  Never in my life heard anyone refer to an avocado as an alligator pair ::)  But I can see old fisher families see one for the first time and call it that.

I can tell if someone isn't native to this part of the country if they refer to a freeway as "the 5" or "the 10". We don't do that around here, freeways are called "I-5".

I'd like to see a map of where they pronounce words the 'wrong' way. Like the double 'o' in 'room' being pronounced like 'cook' or 'book' instead of like 'boom'.

They call a room a "rum" which rhymes with book in NY and NJ.  I know.  I grew up there.  A roof was called a ruf.
