We are actually contemplating trying aqua phonics....just not sure what veggies to do...

how do people get the water clear  when it goes thru my plants the water comes out very yellow??? some times it so dark its hard to see thru

there is actually no substrate at all and the water is always flowing past the roots

That limits the type of plants you can grow with the system.  Many plants require a FD system (flood and drain).  I've been thinking of doing some aquaponics too!
