What the filter is some of you use that you move from tank to tank. Looking to get one but for the life of me I can't remember what it's called

I needed more but I've been told that the new ones aren't built as well.  I kept one going on every tank over 30 gallons 24/7 for as long as I can remember.  I decided to do without them for a couple of weeks.  I found out that I have to do more wipe downs but that the only tanks I feel they are a great benifit are the overstocked ones.  I've decided to save the ones I have now for when I get overstocked, which will happen again inspite of my intentions ::)
