Title: 'New's' Angels
Post by: New_b0401 on September 22, 2014, 08:26:48 PM
Hello everyone I'm new to breeding angels so any advice and guidance would be great I'll start with posting pictures of my pair and then I'll add on pictures of my other angels(:
Any genetic information that you can tell on this pair would be great!

This pair is in their own 20 gallon tall and they are on their fourth spawn as of yesterday. My female in inexperienced, but the male is proven. I've never made it to wiggler stage, but I'm still trying and trying not to get discouraged  :).

Looks to be a std Koi....the word Pariaba is only used to describe a Philippine blue with 2 stripeless genes....

Yes I do have a couple of Koi Paraiba.  Never heard of it until Jon gave me the geno and I plugged it into the calculator.  They came from a Koi x Smokey Paraiba pairing.  I think the smokey is het for gold. 8)

So it's possible to have a koi parabia?
Ok just to clear I few things up for the "New_b"
pb= Philippine blue
het= heterozygous
Correct?
What does std and gm mean?

I have a lot to learn, but I'll get there in the meantime I'll be bombarding you all with questions ;)
Anyone know of a some good reads to help with angel genetics, colors, all that good stuff?

Gm/Gm S/S pb/pb..or Gm/g S/S pb/pb.....= pb Koi pariaba.....

het= heterozygous.....one copy of a gene on a loci

homogeneous= two copies of a gene on a loci

Ten active loci at this time..

1) Dark, Marble, gold Marble, gold
2) Zebra, Stripless

Dark (D) incomplete dominant, Gold (g) recessive and Marble (M) incomplete dominant

Dominate genes are indicated with a capitol letter and the first in the bracket. ex: Stripless - Ghost: S/+ Generally dominate genes express with heterozygous traits.

Recessive genes are indicated with a lower case letter and are second in the bracket. ex: Albino (het) +/a Generally recessive genes do not express in heterozygous form, only in homozygous form.

Heterozygous: One gene (het)

Homozygous: two genes

Some genes do not show unless the fish is homozygous for the gene

Geneotype: What genes the fish carries

Phenotype: What you see as expression as far as color, pattern, and/or finnage.

To this day, there are not any gender specific traits that have been found.

Thank you so much this really helped! I'll have to read a little closer to wrap my head around it but I get the idea. I took a genetics class so I know how they work I was just unaware of what types of genetics angels have. I actually get paid to figure out genetics for a horse breeding farm in the area. ::) I love playing with genetics!!!   ;)
