Title: The Beast
Post by: LizStreithorst on August 04, 2015, 02:51:21 PM
The Beast gave me a bit of a scare driving to work this morning.  If I haven't told you, I go into a bit of a panic when one of my vehicles fails.  I know it's silly, but that's the way it is...

Everything was fine and then I went up a hill and lost a lot of power.  He kinda started to tremble.  His engine light never came on but I bet my personal one would have if I had come with one ;)  It was nothing but hills for several miles.  Every time I went up one I feared I wouldn't make it.  I had him floored and The Beast should take off like a shot when he's floored.  He was struggling to make 40 mph.
Once it got flat he seemed to be better.  I drove to Chip who doesn't do diesels but is my buddy.  I thought may be fuel filter but Chip didn't want him and sent me next door where they do some diesel work.  I told the guy what happened and he said it sounded like the fuel filter.  He asked how long since I'd had it changed but since I was still in a bit of a panic I couldn't remember.  He said that he'd change it and have The Beast ready by the time I got off work ;D

Once I calmed down, I realized that it had been 7 1/2 years since I'd had it changed :-[  I tried to buy one at the NAPA place few years ago but they didn't have one in stock and said that they'd get one the next day.  I said that I'd pick one up next time I was in to buy oil.  Then I forgot about it :-[ :-[ :-[

The poor Beast.  He's such a fine old man.  I feel guilty for having neglected him.  But when I picked him up and drove him home I could tell that he felt like a million bucks.  The guy at the shop said that the filter was so bad he suggested that I change it again in a couple of months.  I will.

It happened again.  this time I was in Hatteiesburg.  Just delivered fish to the LFS and the wholsaler.  Everything was perfect.  I was headed to the slaughter house for kidneys when it started again.  I immediately turned around and headed back home about 30 miles away.  It got worse and worse.  It got so I was driving down the shoulder of the interstate, flashers flashing, at 15 mph.  It would go down to 10 mph going up hill and hit 30 down hill.  Once it quit but I gave it a few minutes and it restarted.  I doubted that I would make it home, but I did.

I got off the interstate at my exit and pulled into a gas station/convenience store.  As soon as I stopped, the beast died.  I stopped where my towing guy could load The Beast if he wouldn't restart.  I went into the store wanting to buy something for bad fuel.  They had nothing so I bought what they did have that might help and wouldn't hurt, "Lucas upper cylinder lubricant and injector cleaner"  I poured it in, got in The Beast, cranked him up, and he was back to running perfectly!

I can't believe that it had to do with the stuff I added to the fuel tank.  It didn't even have time to mix with the fuel.  I called the guy in Ellisville who does some work on diesels but is by no means Gods gift to a diesel engine.  He thinks that it's the filter again because my old one was too gross for words.  I told him today's story.  I offered to have it towed to my real diesel man who is kinda far in the wrong direction but he said that I bring it back for another filter change.  I'm sure the beast will make it even if he limps in a 15 mph.

Sorry to dump on you guys when I get all stressed.

I was planning on going on to work after my chores but I had no dogs on the book, and my cell hasn't rung, and I've made a day's pay selling fish, and I need to chill.  I shall self medicate and play in the fish room.  After selling a bunch  I need to consolidate  fish into fewer tanks.

Yes, it almost sounds like you got some bad fuel at one time and it really gummed things up.....hopefully the new filter and injection cleaner will halp get rid of the backed up sludge.....??.....relax....enjoy the day.... ;D

I'm starting to feel better.  But let me tell you the worst part of limping home on the interstate...there is a bridge over the leaf river.  It's actually 3 bridges, one for the river itself and 2 for run off in case it floods.  The bridge is good, but not modern.  I'd never noticed before but it has no shoulder to drive on at 15 mph.  I was limping across it, flashers flashing, as close to the side as I could manage and some ass hole comes up behind me at what seemed to me like 100 mph.  I saw him coming up in a silver pick up headed right for me.  He acted like he didn't even see me.  He got so close to hitting The Beast at full speed that I let out a scream!  Then he zipped past at what seemed to be inches from me.  Stupid mean spirited red neck bastard.

OK, I'm over it now.  Headed to the fish room.  Thanks for letting me rant, gentlemen.

Glad you made it home in one piece Liz.  The highway is a dangerous place.  Too many folks not paying enough attention for the speed they are traveling.

At least mine were both legal. But alas I really don't care for bacon much. But it seem to be the answer for everything these days.

Vodka works better.

Beast update...I left for work early in case he had problems again and I had to creep in at 15mph.  He started to get funny on me, but I cut off the AC (it makes a difference!) and he got fine again.

He's with BJ now.  He's going to replace the filter again and drain the fuel that's left in it.  He agreed that I put in a bottle of injector cleaner the next couple of times I fuel up.

Liz the best injector cleaner I have found is from SeaFoam and you can get it at Wally World for around $7.00. I use it twice a year in my truck and car. I also use their product to clean my engine before a oil change twice a year also.

The Beast seems healthy again.  the guy didn't drain the fuel tank :(  I wish he had.  He told me to take him home and run him until he got low on fuel, then fill him up and add the injector cleaner for the next two fill ups.  At least all the bad crap will settle to the bottom while he sits running at home.  From now on I'll fill him up when the tank gets down to 1/4 full so the crap stays on the bottom.    I found George's SeaFoam at the local Auto Zone.  It was $11.00 a bottle but on special for buy one get one at half price.  I bought 4 bottles, one is for Charlotte.  Now I just need to look up The Beast's fuel tank capacity.  I'm sure he has a huge tank because he's such a big guy.  He may take 2 bottles of SeaFoam per fill up.  I'll find out.
Title: Re: The Beast
Post by: GeorgeG on August 07, 2015, 08:58:37 PM
The cost at AutoZone and Napa is twice the cost of Wally's that is why I said go there but if they gave you a discount it is good stuff to use.

Think about it Liz when the crap settles to the bottom do you really think it is going to sit there when you fill it up. Nope as soon as you dump fuel in the tank it will stir it up again. Best thing to do is change the fuel filters on a regular basis they are cheaper than new injectors. I never buy gas at the gas station when they are filling up those big underground tanks because that 6 inch hose dumps a lot of gas real quick into those tanks and stirs up any stuff that may be on the bottom. I go somewhere else or wait until the next day to fill up.

I prefer to shop in the tiny town where I work.  I like supporting my local businesses and and driving to Wally's is a pain.  I've been running the beast since I got home and he has refused to get so low on fuel for me to have him filled back up.  Still too much for me to stir up all the crap on the bottom of the tank and drive 12 miles up and down hills to work.  I'll take Charlotte to work in the morning.

I know that y'all are as sick and tired of me talking about The Beast as I am...I was headed to the post office in town.  My horse was on my road so I stepped on the brake so I wouldn't hit her in the butt.  He didn't want to stop.  I stomped on the brake and make him stop.  It made a noise that I can't type the sound of.  I went on down my own dirt road testing the brakes and it did the same thing 3 more times.  Then problem seemed to go away but my ABS light came on.

I drove to town, testing the brakes all along the way.  I drove straight to Chip's and told him what was up.  He told me to bring it in Wed. and he would diagnose it.  I told Chip that I was thinking that I was thinking of selling The Beast.  I told him about them having to replace my fuel filter after just 2 days and what I'd read about the fuel tank he has.  Chip actually finished my sentence.  I said "The coating they put on the inside of the tank"  and he said "flakes off".  I should have asked him how he knew but I didn't.

I think that I'll  w!w and think about how to proceed.

I have decided to sell him :'(  The full fuel tank fix will cost to much for me to invest in a huge van that I no longer need.  What I need is Charlotte and a little pixie.

I stopped by Chip's place this afternoon to tell him that The Beast wouldn't be in to see him tomorrow.  The ABS light went off and there's no way to find out the problem unless it's on.  I hope that the next time this happens I don't hit somebody :o  I asked Chip how he knew about the fuel tank problem.  He said that his uncle had a 250 diesel that had "the same damn thing"  And the one sitting outside his shop has "the same damn thing".

Now I need help with a moral problem...I know that I could get more for him if I were to sell him myself to an individual then take my money and go find a pixie.  I don't think that I can to it in good conscience knowing that a potentially dangerous problem lurks and an expensive repair is in the future.  I think that what I need to do is go to a used car lot to find a pixie I like and trade him in.  He will be sent to the used car auction.  Should I buy a new fuel tank and have it replaced, keep my fingers crossed on the brake problem and sell him to an individual?  What would y'all do?

Do used car lots ever let you trade in a more valuable vehicle for a vehicle of lesser value and give you the balance in money?  I've traded in before but have always bought a more valuable one than I was trading so I don't know.

Please advise me.  I sure wish JR were still here.

I'd fix it and keep it. At least with the vehicle you have you know what is wrong and how it's been taken care of. Buy a used vehicle and you can be in all sorts of things. Or get lucky and never spend a dime on it. I'm sort of in the same situation. My Dakcrapota needs the shift solenoid replaced among other things. I don't have the cash to really do it and I can't afford a new car right now the economy is doing so well. That's pretty much why I've resurrected the 89 Van. Less things wrong with it. I think. It's been sitting a few years. I've replaced the fuel pump and the alternator. A/C will need a charge. And new tires. Well both vehicles need that. I've run her down the road a bit and she seems to be OK otherwise. Now if it would stop raining long enough to get more work done to her.

My feelings are if you fix it....then you can ask a firm price and get what it's worth....you won't get that on a trade in....plus, you can safely drive it when needed til it sells...or just decide to keep it..........after all it's paid for  ;D.....and you know the vehicle well....

Thank you gentlemen.  I'll have him fixed as you suggested.  It will give me more options in the future.

Chip won't want to do this job and I seriously doubt will have the expertise to do it the least expensive way (see previous link).  I doubt that the shop across the street from him can do it the cheap way either.  Besides, I'm not in love with them...always new managers and new employees.  I have a call in to my real diesel fix it man who is kind of far.  He will call me back when he gets back from a service trip.  I trust him. I will tell him what I know and find out if he can do it the least expensive way.  If not, I will ask him how he would it.  I'm sure that he has seen this problem before.  Heck, Chip doesn't even do diesels and he's seen it twice.

My lovely diesel man knew all about this and can fix it the least expensive way.  He says that there's a radiator shop in the next town over who has done this for him several times.  He'll pull the tank and take it to them, check the lines and blow them out if they need it.. and make sure that everything is perfectly clean.  I'm so relieved.

The carpenter just showed up with a trailer full of lumber for the carport.  He'll get started tomorrow.  He'll use up my stash of cash.  Thank God my diesel man takes credit cards.

Since the fuel tank from these years are crap 1999-2010 I would ask your chip friend if he could find out if a newer one would fit in your truck. Then if they do I would hit the junk yards up for the 2011-2015 price and maybe find one there . You know maybe the junk yard has a van with the repaired one in it. Won't hurt to ask and call around.

Chip doesn't do diesel work, he has just seen the problem before.  I'm taking The beast to my really good diesel man.

Watch the video I posted.  If I get a Ford one new it will cost around around $1500 plus installation and it will have the same problem.  One from the junk yard will have the same problem that will turn up sooner.   Options on buying an after market  plastic one and skid plates or an aluminium one will cost even more.  I'm doing the right thing.  Plus my diesel man will blow out the lines, check the fuel pressure and take a filter apart that may live in the tank (I'm not sure.  I saw a video but the audio wasn't good) and pry it apart and clean the screens in it that I'm sure have plugged up.  I have read that if you drive around with low fuel pressure it will hurt your injectors.

I trust this diesel man.  He has always done an excellent job for me and doesn't rip me off.  He always drives me back to the shop, too.  He's the right man for the job.  I like and trust him and he likes me, and that's that.

I like and trust him and he likes me, and that's that.

...then he's da man to go with.......yup..

Another thing in his favor, it turns out that my carpenter who sold me my lovely Charlotte and is a good man who does good work knows him, and says he's a good man.  A good man saying that another man is good is a big compliment.
