When I was my second year in college our prof took us to the top of Mt. Rogers in SW Virginia. Except for the tree species (Black and Red Spruce there) this reminds me of my very first visit to a "Spruce Cap" on a mountain top. It was very foggy and like walking into some kind of fairy land carpeted with a thick, lush carpet of mosses everywhere.

We get some of this over in the Olympic Peninsula Northern Rain Forest here in WA.

It reminded me of the Olympic forest. Trees growing on rotted trees, with moss growing on them abd plants growing on the moss. Perhaps with fungus or a slime mold growing on that.
