he saved the world from a war the Americans almost started by dropping depth charges on a vessel in international waters.

I'm no expert on the proper protocol here but if I had to guess I'd say the Americans were not supposed to do this and the soviets aboard the sub may have been justified in using the nuke.

I wonder why they got Denzel Washington to play him in  the movie?

In this case, the depth charges were designed only to drive the boat to the surface to be identified, and wouldn't destroy the boat. The sub Captain knew it too...

I haven't read anything other than the link you provided.  I don't know if the sub was acting in a threatening manner or not.  I still think it could be construed as an attack to be depth charged in international waters.  I don't know anything about these depth charges but I can only imagine the uproar that would have occurred in the US had the roles been reversed.

They should have just used real depth charges and blown em away.......it was the Cuban missile crisis....we could blame it on the Bermuda Triangle.. ;D
