Is there a specific brand of foam that is safe. I know Porte foam is, but you mentioned you got yours from a remnant store.

There's a green colored foam available at fabric stores like JoAnn's....it's tight pore but will work. We use it for homemade sponge filters sometimes. Just make sure you get the green as it doesn't have fire retardant chemicals added to them......

you can get the real deal here...

here's some more technical information on them...

What the guy in the video didn't say is that open pore foam is safe but closed foam is not.  You can tell which is which if you look at both together.  Closed pore looks like foam rubber like in sofa cushions.  With open pore you can actually see the open pores along the cut edges.

(I don't know this for a fact but I've heard it from so many people who should know fact from fiction that I believe it.)

I have no reason to upgrade from my sponge filters, but if I were to start from scratch I would make my own and I'd use Poret.  It costs more because it's made well according to their high standards.  At least they sold me.  Besides, it's what Hansie uses.  If anyone knows what's best, it's Hans.

When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because those weirdos are your tribe.  (Sweatpants & Coffee)

I have HMF and the Corner HMF's in 70% of my tanks and wounder why I did not do it earlier.. Best bang for the buck...  I use them to seed other sponges for when I set up a new tank....
