Not the advise I'd offer for raising happy healthy fish, but I guess it could be a minimal starting place for someone new to the hobby.

LOL...the Petco threw me too....but some of them actually employ some knowlegeable staff.....some...around here, our Petsmart has the best working crew....
Even our one remaining 'mom&pop store is a little iffy with the HS kids working there..but not bad..at least they try....

Good for you....bring along the next fishkeeper generation. Our Petco has one in a 'blue moon' that even sounds interested in what they're doing. The Petsmart ,however, seems to draw employees that enjoy the hobby and the interaction with others....tanks are better cared for too.

Same here, our Petsmart has a very nice fish department.  Although I have only purchased Otocinclus Cats, a dozen feeder Goldfish and a handful of plants, they are helpful and friendly.  It's a 40 minute drive to the nearest Petco and they don't have a fish department, but they went above and beyond in getting me the 40 breeders during the $1 per gallon sale.

Wow, the blue guppies in that brochure are really pretty! :D

My local Petco sucks. But The all the other LFS aren't much better either. :(
