Title: New Dantums
Post by: PaulineMi on January 16, 2015, 09:43:32 AM
The Dantums I won via a gift certificate donated by David at Angelfish USA arrived today.

Opening the styrofoam lined box

The heat packs were nice and warm. Our overnight temperatures were in the 20's

(http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc306/paulinemi/Dantum%20Angel/DantumsDayOneJan1520150661_zps4361e83b.jpg) (http://s218.photobucket.com/user/paulinemi/media/Dantum%20Angel/DantumsDayOneJan1520150661_zps4361e83b.jpg.html)

The temp in the box is a little cooler than I expected based on the heat pack temps

And here are the 4 little Dantums, looking to be in good condition as they're getting lowered into the tank in their shipping bag to warm up

Thanx, Pauline.....the heat packs did their job nicely, for only two.....holding the 70's is excellent.....those must have been the 72hr packs....

The Dantums look great.....it's good to hear that all went well.....that was two day shipping right??

Yes Ron...it's always fun getting new fish delivered.   ;D

Jon...Shipping was overnight with guaranteed delivery by 10:30 a.m.

Here are three of the four little pre-dimes turned loose in their QT tank. This group has nice long ventral fins. The Dantums of this size that I got last year had short ventrals but they grew out nicely.

Yes, they're albinos, pure white with red eyes.  I just don't have lights on in their part of the room yet.  Plus no flash either as I don't want to spook them.

How cute they are Pauline.  I hope to have some Dantums someday.  A tank with just them, like you have.  I have also decided I want another tank of Australian Rainbowfish like I had for years.  They are so beautiful in a planted tank.

Pauline, I have a question about the shiping.  It looked like the box was more filler than fish, am I wrong.  What were the inside dimensions of the box?  Sorry that these are strange questions, but your answer will help me.

Thanks Barb and Willie.   :)  I will enjoy raising these guys Dennis.

Liz, the inside dimensions are 8x8x8.

;D....and thank you... ;D    the more methods you can see, the more you learn. I've received boxes from them before...but was curious how they handled the pretty cold weather......it seems what they do overnight wouldn't hold up for 2-3 day shipping tho......IMHO.....more heat packs, under the bags, as well as the two taped to the lid would be needed.....just my observation....anyone else comment??....

I agree with you completely Jon.  Anyone should be able to pack an over-night box.  The trick is getting them there using affordable 2-3 day shipping.  I always like to see how other folks pack their boxes, but I think in the end, everyone develops their own style and what they are comfortable with.  I probably spent 6 or 8 years refining my boxes until I got them just where I wanted them.

Yes, they do.....David, and Carol, have already crossed them out.....and still no 'mystery meat' identification as to what they are genetically......could be a lot of hoo bob over nothing special....who knows..??

I asked because I want to ship fish the affordable way.  I needed to know the size of the box and how much air/packing was in the box.  My thinking is that a small styo like my little Hansie boxes that has room for 2 adult Anglefish in warm water and a single 72 hr heat pack will keep the fish warm for 3 days max.  Barb agrees but she's no expert when it comes to shiping.  I think that my Hansie box can do it, but I don't know for sure. and am afraid to experiment on an excellent pair.

pack a box and put it outside for three days in a shady spot.....then check the temps....Hansie has some nice boxes, but I'm not sure they were intended for severe winter shipping....??
do a test....your temps are mild with cool evenings, you'll get an idea anyway.....

How obvious a test.  I didn't even think of it.  It sure 'nuf won't be this weekend.  It is warm and clear and glorious today and will stay that way for several days.  When it turns wickedly cold again I'll do the test.  Thanks, Mugs.

I think the best box I ever saw was one I got from a German freshwater shrimp breeder.  He sent me some Orange Eyed Blue Tiger shrimp that were in transit for 14 days counting the time they took to get through customs.  The shrimp arrived in excellent condition.

His box was a small medical supply insulated box.  It was similar to those boxes that Omaha Steaks uses to ship their beef in.  Very sturdy one-piece styro-foam with a tight fitting notched lid.  The styro fit snuggly inside a cardboard box for protection.  I kept the box for years but never had anything small enough to ship so it never got used.
