i never heard of these before.

They had a nice little story on Caecilians (rubber eels in pet stores).
They are leg-less, tail-less amphibeans that shed their skin and give birth to live young after a 21 month gestation period.

Yes, it's only recently that some of the German mags are being translated into English.  Rather ironic as English started out as a West Germanic language that was first spoken in early medieval times.....

To say the hobby is more active on the other side of the pond is putting it very mildly.  A couple years ago Practical Fishkeeping, a UK based magazine, published a flyer with all the LFS stores in the UK.  There were over 1400.  Considering that the whole of the UK is just slightly larger than the state of Ohio, that's a lot of stores selling aquarium products.
