Title: A question for the smart people
Post by: LizStreithorst on May 17, 2015, 10:58:20 AM
Can anybody 'splain me this and tell me the solution?  I've been trying to download Malwarebytes.  Everything goes normally.  Then a window pops up that says that my computer won't let me do it because it's potentially dangerous.  I click "run anyway" and another window comes up telling me that the file is corrupted and to do it again.  I've done it again and again and again always with the same result.

New faithful came with another anti virus software but it expired after a month.  I think it may have been Avast.  The computer tells me from time to time that it has expired and wants me to buy it.  I see no reason to buy it when I should be able to get the same protection for free.

I have a trial McAfee that I hate....it works, but doesn't like anything....I just clicked 'ok' despite the pop up....and loaded the free version of Malwarebytes...

Here's the other one that I like too....Spybot Search and Destroy....

https://www.safer-networking.org/ (https://www.safer-networking.org/)

I've used CCCleaner too with good results...........what one doesn't get, the others do...........Jan's running Norton.....cheap and effective but notification pops are a pain in the a$$

Let's get Dennis's take on this too....

Liz, just download the "free" version of Avast: http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus-2015/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?tag=main;pop  I've been using it for a while now on several laptops and it works fine.

I checked my programs and my free trial that came with new faithful was McAfee.  I liked it fine, New Faithful seemed to run faster back when it was working.  I just don't want to buy it.

Marc, I've heard good things about Avast, too.  I'm trying to install the Malware again. When I fail I'll try Avast and see if I have better luck.

I have all my Windows clients on AVG.   http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage (http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage)

If it won't install either, you may already have a virus.....

Liz, go to your downloads folder and delete the corrupt downloads & then restart your system.  Download the free version of AVG again and see if it will install.

Liz, does your new system have Windows 8?  If so, it has its own anti-virus built right in.....

It came with windows 8.  I think it may have updated itself to Windows 8.1.  I'm not sure.  If that's the case why did it come with a free trial of McAfee and why does it refuse to install Malwarebytes, Avast, and AVG?

I can't access the link you sent.  It says. "failure to connect to web server"

No doubt McAfee is a "Microsoft Partner".  If they can sell you something you don't need they think they have done a good thing.  This country runs on greed, not the betterment of humanity.

If the link doesn't work, just Google "microsoft windows 8 antivirus".....

Mug, I did as you said.  I dumped everything except Google Chrome and my Spider solitaire that I first down loaded right after I got New Faithful.   I rebooted and tried to install the AVG and it still says "file corrupt".   I sure wish that I were smarter.  Do I really need to delete Chrome and Spider slotaire to make this work?

Dennis, I will google it and do as it says.

I swear to God, I've always been good at DIY, but I sure do suck when it comes computers.

Dennis, it refuses to start the download no matter how may time I ask it to.  How could I have picked up a bad virus when all I do is search for recipes and visit fish and dog grooming forums.  I'd put a gun to my head if I had one.  Since I won't own one I will do a WC.

This too shall pass.

Which download are you talking about, Mug?  The Microsoft one?  I couldn't even get that one to start downloading.  I deleted the McAfee, rebooted and tried Malwarebytes again.  Still no joy.

Can you open this link???  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/how-find-remove-virus#1TC=t1 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/how-find-remove-virus#1TC=t1)

It goes into how to use the anti-virus / anti-malware software that comes standard with Windows 8.

It says that it has been turned off and is not monitoring my computer and that I should turn off any app that may be monitoring her.  To my knowledge I have no other application doing this.  Once again, no joy :'(

Did you uninstall all the McAfee parts....there are (3)

I did as far as I can figure.  I right clicked on the program and clicked uninstall.  When I look for it now it is no longer there.

I've gotten to the point where I don't give a f....the computer still works.  If and when it quits working I'll haul it into a fix it shop.  I have a laptop that I despise that I can use until it's fixed.

I did.  I could always do a bigger reboot by un plugging it or turning the switch to off.  I just did it by pushing the button on the computer.

All I know is that when I reboot she asks me for my password and when I type it in she welcomes me and opens up.  does that mean that I'm her admin?

Damn, I wish I could find a good fight.  I can't remember wanting to fight this much since I left The Bad Man.  If I were to find a fight that was already ongoing I'd jump right in and either whup ass or get mine whupped.  It wouldn't matter which.  It's all about the release of built up frustration :o

I just texted my dear young computer fix it guy.  I hated bothering him more that I hated bothering Dennis.  Last time his mom brought one of her dogs in she told me he was getting married.  He may be married by now for all I know.  He's always charged me not enough and I always threw in some herbs.  This time I have money and have no herbs :-[  I hope that he will agree to fix New Faithful.  the thought of taking  her to some generic computer fix it shop is repugnant to me.

No bother Liz.  Have him install the software we talked about and in the future I may be able to fix it from afar.  LOL

I haven't heard back from my sweet guy.  He may have gotten married and moved away for all I know.  He wasn't terribly happy in this area where he grew up.  I'll call his mom and ask her tomorrow.  I have her card with her phone number there.

If he is no longer around I think I'll keep on using New Faithful until she doesn't let me talk on the forums or google stuff.  I hate the idea of letting someone I don't know have his way with her.

It has to be something simple....??.....download the download to your old computer, then put on a flash stick and install on the new one..... ;D

I have no choice but to take New Faithful to some unknown computer fix-it place.  She has become slower than Old Faithful.  I'll ask around for recomendations when I go back to work Tuesday.

It seems so unfair that I picked up a virus 2 weeks after that free McAfee thing expired.  It's not like I watch porn and ask for viruses.  All I do it look for recipes and talk on forums.  Oh well, these things happen.  It was my fault.  I should have installed MalwareBytes the day my free trial expired.

That was true back in the day, but now, any site that runs ads can do bad things to your system.  This is true even on sites you would normally trust.  What happens is, the ads come from other sources, often ones that have bad intentions.
