Title: Windows 10...
Post by: Mugwump on June 01, 2015, 02:03:19 PM
Is set for distribution in July....they have reservations too......folks with Win 7/Win 8 will get an option for an upgrade.

I'm wondering if it's worth it.....looks mostly like 'bells & whistles' ???

Let meknow what you think of it if you get it.
I have a Windows 8 machine I am annoyed with.

If they'd just take XP and called it windows 10 I'd be a happy camper.  They weren't smart enough to realize that they had a good thing with XP.

I can't understand why anyone who is not tied to a legacy Windows application would spend money on yet another version of Windows.....  even Apple has switched to a Unix derivation.

Sometimes in a business environment you just can't get away from Windows easily, but at home, it's a no brainer to switch to a Linux distribution.  With over 330,000 open source software packages, it's highly unlikely that you can't find software to do what you want.

For years I was a major supporter of Microsoft in light of all that Bill Gates had done to advance desktop computing, but in 2010 after he turned the company over to the Harvard money men I got fed up.  Five years later and I'm running 2 business' with Debian Linux and it's the best thing I could have done.....  looking back, I wished I had switched over earlier.

Mostly I do Macs.
For a few special things I am using Linux as a learning experience.

Getting it installed on your computer is the biggest hurdle.  After that, it works pretty much the same as all the rest of the graphical user interfaces.  The command line is definitely different from Windows, but how many typical users ever go there.....

Well if you use a desktop that lets you put shortcuts there you can call the software whatever you wish.....  just like in Windows.

If you use a desktop like Unity, it only shows the icons without any application names, but it's certainly not hard to figure out what does what.

I would suggest starting out with a distro like Ubuntu Mate (https://ubuntu-mate.org/ (https://ubuntu-mate.org/)), or Linux Lite (https://www.linuxliteos.com/ (https://www.linuxliteos.com/)).  Both of these have an interface similar to what you are used to with Windows.

The standard version of Ubuntu switched from Gnome to the Unity desktop back in 2011 and throughly pissed off the Ubuntu followers in a very similar fashion to how Microsoft did with Windows 8.  They have listened to the users and fixed much of Unity, but it's still very different from what most are used to using.

I would also recommend that you get an inexpensive external usb hard drive and create a Windows system restore image before trying to run two operating systems on the same computer.  It's simply cheap insurance for when things go wrong.  It  should be available under the maintenance menu in both Win 7 & 8.

Computers are just like any other tool.  When I first brought home my craftsman table saw I couldn't build cabinetry or fine furniture.  With trial and error, and lots of practice, I learned how to build what I wanted.  It was the same with my first computer.  I wasn't building websites and writing custom software in just a couple of days.

I encourage everyone to experiment with their computer system.  It's very rewarding and keeps our minds sharp.  And to those who say, "I can't do that!", my response is that we all learn to do what we really want to do.....

I'll sit here and wait for the smart people I trust to try it first and tell me how wonderful it is before I give it a try.  I'm only good at new computer things when I'm backed into a corner with nobody to help me but myself.  I dread the new Windows 10.  Thank God the icon has not appeared on mine yet.  What about virus protection?  Will MalwareBytes run on it?

I think my biggest question about the 'free' Windows 10 upgrade would be what if it sucks???  Can I go back to a usable Windows 7 or is that option gone once I run the update???  I would want assurance that I can go back if 10 turns out to be just as big a stinker as 8.

FWIW, I have zero experience with Windows 8 other than playing with the free trial MS sent out.  I don't know of any local business running it.....

I thought that one would appear after New Faithful shut herself down to install an update.  No icon appeared, thank God.

I want someone or sometwo of the smart people to install Linxus.  If they love it I'll try to do it while shaking in my boots and peeing my pants.  Dennis, does it have photo ware that's as easy to use as the old Micorsoft Office Picture app that came with XP?  It's the only one I'm smart enough to use.  Even Photo Bucket is over my head :-[

There are literally hundreds of free graphics applications for Linux.  I use GIMP.  While it does far more than I need, I find it very easy to do what I do need it to do.....

You're a darlin' Dennis.  I learn easily when I can watch.  I have a problem with written instructions especially when I fear that they will be over my head.  My head starts to swim like it did when I was learning to read as a kid.  I think it has to do with being dyslexic back when they didn't know what it was.  Back then they thought that I was stupid.  It took me a very long time for me come to know that I am not stupid, that in fact I am quite bright in my own way.

You should vacation in New Orleans.  May be go the the Jazz Festival...I'm just a 2 hour drive from there.

Thanks Dennis.....I'm not liking some of what I'm reading....antivirus proggies may work??...uninstall them before doing the '10' upgrade....basic edition, you have no control over updates???

Eliminating :
    Windows Media Center
    DVD playback
    Desktop gadgets
    Preinstalled games
    Floppy drive support
    Windows Live Essentials (Windows Essentials)
    Windows Updates
Windows Virtual PC with Windows XP Mode

Compatibility....
What can be done about compatibility issues?
Da Costa recommended checking hardware and software vendors for the latest updates before performing the Windows 10 upgrade. Microsoft's "reservation app" may indicate the incompatibilities in advance, but users "can always run Windows Update after installing Windows 10 and download the latest drivers," he explained. He wrote an article on how to install Windows 10 drivers at this page....

So a lot of apps/proggies won't work but not their problem??...we have to check if what we use works or not?....wonderful, as usual...

I use 'Open Office'...I'm not worried about losing old MSOffice junk... ;D

I'll hold out as long as possible before upgrading.... ;D

If you have the memory & disk space you might be better off installing Virtual Box and running a copy of Linux that way.  You don't have to worry about messing up your base Windows installation with a virtual machine and it's really pretty painless to set-up.

I use it just the opposite way with Windows running as a virtual machine on my Linux system.  Makes it easy to trouble shoot client systems and I can have multiple versions of Windows available.

Just a thought.....

Dennis, if I can do this safely without you showing up at my doorstep hard drive in hand is there a way?  I have had enough of Microsoft.  I've decided that I hate it so much that I want nothing to do with it.  What is a Virtual Box and can I buy one at Best Buy?  New Faithful is new and has loads of memory.

I got pissed off when I couldn't install Microsoft Office Picture Manager after I did the system restore after the bad virus.  I need to have Microsoft Office installed.  I can get it for free for a year but after a year they will want money >:(

Or perhaps I should figure out how to use Photo Bucket.  I've tried a few times but although the rest of the world can do it, I'm too damn stupid.  Sometimes I hate myself >:(

Liz, Virtual Box is software that allows you to basically run a system within a system.  Here's the link with more info.....

You could just as easily run Windows XP with Virtual Box.  It may be something you want to talk over with your computer guy when he comes to visit.

My computer guy is too busy to bother with me now,  He has a great new job that challenges him and he's getting married this month.

Muggers, I was able to open the pic in virtual box but I was not able to crop, correct and resize.  I'm sure it was my fault.  I will try again tomorrow.  Virtual Box was very very slow on New Faithful.  I'm thinking now that Microsoft has me in it's clutches.  I can get office free for a year and download the easy photo software that is fast and easy.  After a year I'll have to pay for something that IMO should be free.  It used to be free but the damn money grubbers now want me to pay.  (sorry, I'm frustrated)

All I wanted to do was post a pic of my HB juvies attacking the cube of Dan's freeze dried blackworms  that I stuck to the front of their tank.

Liz....Slickpic doesn't need virtualbox....just go to the site....download a few pics to your album, and then simply right click for 'pic' location, copy, and post as an 'img' here.....
