Dark Karo syrup with butter swirled in might be a good replacement...

.... no dark Karo around ....but after I had finished, I dug around and did find a bottle of 'Brer Rabbit' type black strap molasses  |^|.....there's maybe 2-3 big biscuits left too... ;D

I never did develop an appreciation for the taste of molasses...we always had the dark Karo around...probably less costly...I haven't had it in so long, but I remember the taste...yummmmmm |^| |^|
