I moved them to a 120 today. They're not yet dime size but there are a ton of them. The're a bit lost having been just moved into a tank almost twice the size that they were in.
They are so small but they have all turned. I am impressed with what this pair that I paid too much for has produced in it's first spawn. I'll take a pic and post it may be Sunday. Too tired now, and haven't eaten yet.

....time yo kick back and chill..... w!w |^| w!w
food first. w!w later. then bed.
I ate and got a second wind. A bunch of them were all grouped in a corner of the tank and I took this pic.
...WOW ! great pic.... |^|
...I second that WOW and am amazed at how uniform they appear in their color patterns...!
Great looking spawn. |^| |^| |^| |^| |^|
They look good Liz, Let me know when you start selling them.
WOW WOW WOW is all i can say
Thanks guys. I paid $180. for the pair which is supposed to be $30 more than they are worth, but judging by what they have presented me with it was not too much after all. I have only found one cull in the entire batch.
I'll wait until they're between nickel and quarter size when I start selling them. I'm over shipping big fish. Too much stress and too great a chance of disaster.
I don't normally care for fish that deviate from their natural markings and coloration, but those are cool looking Liz. Very well done! You shouldn't have any problems moving them. |^|
Dennis
I'm getting ready to start selling these guys. I remembered that I'd posted about them here and came back to take a look at the thread.
Gentlemen, tank you very much for the compliments. Mug, I didn't see it as a great pic until I came back to it with new yes. It's not photographically great but it sure does do the fish justice. They are peas in a pod and there are a ton of them.
I'll offer them for sale here first. Y'all will get the best price. Then I'll offer them on Simply and they will get a bit of a price break. Finally I'll offer them on Auqabid and those folks will have to pay what I think the fish are worth.
I'll sell them in groups of 6. If you're interested, shoot me a PM.
1st dibs.
Want me to ship yours Monday, Dale?

Sorry, I was just trying to catch up on reading previous posts. I know this post is a few months old. I've heard of so many tricks on "helping" them express...lights, food, temperature, background, black gravel/sand....and I be heard of just good husbandry. I've had a few spawns and all I got were a few expressing Halfblacks. Nothing spectacular like yours. Can you share what you've done to get this high of expression on this batch?
I treat them same as I would Discus. WC every day and feeding 3 times daily when they're young. I feed mosquito larvae when they're available and the babies are large enough to take them. I don't if that's why I have good luck or not. It's just the way I've always done things.
I did run into a problem with a line I started years ago. I crossed a Zebra from Angels Plus with a Half Black from George Garcia. Out of around 500 fry I had one with a black tail and one that was 1/3 black. They turned out to be a male and a female. When I bred them together all the babies were half black. I bred sib to sib and back to parents for so many generations that they became inbred and slam quit turning. I can think of no other reason that happened. That's why I'm so into fresh blood this time around.
Did you have to limit their light exposure to an "X" number of hours per day? One of my halfblacks here , dark area on body fades but tail remains black when exposed to long periods of light. So I'm thinking lighting can be a factor too? Idk.
I don't do anything special with lighting. I set the timers for 5 minutes on and 5 minutes off. I just use cheap fluorescent from the hardware store.

Is this alternating on/off continues throughout the 24 hour period on them?

I must have been drunk when I wrote the 5 minutes on 5 minutes off thing. I don't know what I was thinking.
