I'm interested in what you think of it myself. Been thinking about trying it to
I want to know, too. My micorsoft office picture manager quit working. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling. It won't work. I get these popups telling me that I should install windows 10. It says. "it has me covered" I am so computericly ignorant but I am not happy. I would switch to Linux as Dennis suggested but I have such fear. What if I get it and am too stupid to make it work and can't get back what I had before, which I wasn't in love with in the first place, without spending an arm and a leg?
So....how do you like it? Does it come with "photo editing for idiots?"

I am not comfortable with this upgrade. I am not convinced that microsoft will not require me to sign into a microsoft account everytime I log in. Right now I sign into my local account and that's the way I like it. This is the beginning of MS moving everything into their cloud. My cloud is here on my backup drives.

Yes, but taking the 'long' install will provide options for changing what you don't want too. The biggest gripe(s) I'm seeing are that it's also geared for the mobile market.....and some prefer Win 7......any new product has a learning curve, and many folks just don't want to change...plus they fear losing a favorite program somehow....
truth be told.....I'm holding out a little longer to wait for any missed bugs to be corrected....I don't hate Win 8....but a 'start menu' would be nice again..
I can deal with Windows 8 but I'm certainly not in love with it as I was from the moment I started using XP.
Surely Dennis will have to deal with Windows 10 in his work. Perhaps he will let us know what he thinks. If only I had the guts I'd switch to Linux.
Upgrade from a clean copy of Windows 7 took 45 minutes. Installed on my $50 IBM laptop. Not a real power house, Core 2 Duo @ 2 GHz with 4GB RAM.
So far, so good. Once I get some of my dev tools loaded I'll have a better idea of how it performs.....

ok....when I do the Win10 setup....besides not sharing wifi...what are some of the others that I normally wouldn't want??
I'm not sure that I want the voice nag,,,,anyone using it?...like it??..
any gaming options that I wouldn't want....are they a drag on resources just sitting idle??
any tips as to what to watch for is appreciated......trying to think ahead here as I'm going to the 'dark side' here shortly....
I turned the voice thing off and well as just about everything else. If you try to do something that you did not select Windows 10 will prompt you to select it. The decision to activate or not select an item is then in your hands.

I hate the Win 8 sign-ins every time....did you just enter bogus login info and take the local option ?.....or install win10 disconnected to the internet?...
Well it's not bogus info, it's the info needed to login to my local network as opposed to the Microsoft network. If you don't actually have a network you could enter whatever you like.
They have a legit reason for doing it their way, and for some folks it might very well be a good thing.

I understand that part....I'd read the easiest way to get the 'local' sign in setup was to either install unconnected...or sign in to the MS login with a bogus email addy and it kicks you to the 'local' acct creation page.....

My local just popped up like it always does. When I went through the install process I did the customized install and said no to everything. When I rebooted it went right ti the local login page. It may have kept the settings from Windows 7.

Yep, same here. I didn't loose any of my Win 7 settings. It even carried over my wireless config on the laptops.
There is a link to click to set-up the local login. It's just not as prominent as the button Microsoft wants you to click for their login. LOL
I'm liking it pretty well. I was thrilled to find that Win X lets you have multiple desktops like Linux. On the weekends, I might be connected to 3 different client systems, it's very nice to have them running on their own desktop. Once I have them all working away, I can open a fourth desktop to play in until one of the client systems needs further attention.

No it's not like a dual-boot system, these are multiple desktops all running at once. You can switch between them and whatever is running on the other desktops just keeps right on cooking while you are working on another desktop. It's kind of hard to explain, but once you get used to working with them, you really miss them when they are not available. It's probably too much to hope that they work as well on Win X as they do in Linux.....

Interesting.
I have a windows machine I have been waiting to get an upgrade on.
Usually I wait a few months for things to get worked out before I do system installs.
I just upgraded my Mac to its new system, just in time to not install the new one which will be coming out soon. Still had to install a legacy java to get an old adobe program to run.

They are just starting to surface Bill. Windows 10 has only been out a little over a week.
I found it somewhat amusing that the 64 bit version of Win X says my 2 dual core xeon processors are not suitable to run Windows 10, but if I load up the 32 bit version, it installs without any complaints.
I was hoping to see if Microsoft had fixed 10 to run better on business class equipment as Windows 7 is simply pathetic on these IBM workstations. Oh well, maybe Windows XV LOL

I have decided to wait a month or two. I want them to make it work before I download.

Just went through the apps and deleted a whole bunch that were loaded during the install. I also updated a lot of the notifications after I had one interrupt my screen asking me "tell your friends how much you like windows 10".
I can see getting notifications if something was going on with my machine but I hate it when MS wants me to pitch their product. I also got the one to upgrade Office 10 to the subscription based Office 365. ??? I got Office 10 for free now they suggest I pay? Turned that one off too. I am sure there will be a few more tweaks necessary as I move along. So far I like it tho.

I'm really liking the fact that under the hood nothing much has changed. I won't need to spend much time learning where MS has hidden the important stuff as the icon to go straight to setting in the task bar is a very nice addition.

I haven't downloaded 10 yet. It seems like you guys are okay with it. Is it time for a computer dufus like me to do it now?
We've been instructed by EFI, the company that makes our print servers not to upgrade to 10. Seems as though it doesn't work with our servers.
I've still got a couple of issues with 10, but overall it's working very well. I did a complete days worth of work using it just the other day.
My issues are with the wireless connection and the VirtualBox software not working.
With the wireless, it works fine unless the system goes to sleep. If it does, then it never gets connected again. It sees the router and all, it just won't establish a connection. If I restart, all is good again.
With VirtualBox, they are getting closer to having it fixed. They say it's due to some security issue. Most likely Microsoft NOT following a standard. MS is famous for publishing standards of how things should work, and then NOT following the standard themselves.....

Thanks guys. I'll go ahead and download in a couple days. Will I need to be ''attending'' the computer the whole time or can I click once and go away for awhile?
It should download unattended Ron. You will need to answer a few questions and oversee the actual upgrade.
Dennis
I'm about to suck it up and do it. I don't want to but I might as well get it over with sooner rather than later.
Great, Liz! We can bug the rest of the gang with our issues!
You first, Ron :P
I've already got my reservation in!
...still working pretty good here......like anything, I'm getting used to it.... |^|
I have it on my 2 running machines and will put it on my last one when I get around to fixing it. So far no problems. |^|
I guess I need to bite the bullet.
Go ahead, Liz..! I did it and it was painless. I'd been having some issues with my computer slowing down. Dennis gave me some good advice on things to try, which I did, and things sped up a little.
Hey, Miss Lucy did it before I did and even she likes it. She doesn't like change in technology at all because of the learning curve! But no complaints and she was coming from 7.
When I downloaded 10 things seem to have sped up even more. Imagination maybe?
I've got it downloading now.
Great! Lucy came from 8.1 like I. The desktop has 7 and she hasn't done it yet.
We all do so many things "on-line" that many of our speed issues are not limited to our own systems, but rather network issues encountered somewhere out in cyberspace.....
Try playing with the tracert command in Windows and you'll be amazed at all the systems a single Internet request goes through on the journey from your system to the destination.
Dennis
I did it! I did it! It was not painful at all! I thought that I would be lost but it feels very comfortable. I'm so proud of myself that I could burst ;D
Way to go Liz!!! You are a very capable lady.
Dennis
Quit pulling my leg, Dennis. Capable with computers I am not. It was just so easy that even I could do it. I didn't even loose my beloved microsoft office picture manager. Hell, If I can do it, anyone can w!w
Way to go, Liz! I knew you could! |^|
+1... |^|
Great job Liz. |^| |^| |^|

No leg pulling intended..... You had problems with your ISP and corrected them. You wanted to update to Windows 10 and DID. You run your own business. You over-see work on your vehicles and property..... need I go on???
Dennis
Thank you Dennis :-[ You know what they say...Necessity is a mother ;)
Very interesting point you bring up Dennis. I never have liked anything to do with working on cars. On the other hand my father seemed to work on his a lot as we were growing up. I guess I was in my 30's when one day I asked him how he got started working on cars and learned so much about them. He told me that when he was a young man, he and his friends had their cars and were raising families, they really couldn't afford to take them to repair shops. So he started fixing his own. He helped his friends too. They in turn helped him on other things when we needed something done, like finishing off the attic for my brother's and my bedroom.
Necessity was the Mother. It also helps form strong relationship bonds.
Well Ron, have you loaded up Win10 yet?..... 8)
