Title: Baby chick is hatching
Post by: LizStreithorst on October 30, 2017, 03:43:02 PM
The little thing is breaking through the shell.  I can hear it peeping inside.  Another has started to break though the shell, but I hear nothing.  No action yet from the other 5 eggs, but this has started three days before I expected it to.

Number two is working at getting out as I type.  Chicks can be sexed at a day old but it takes an Asian expert or instruction from one.  It takes them like 2 seconds per chick.  Where I live there are no hatcheries so I have to wait until the chicks are 4 to 6 months old and start showing secondary sexual characteristics.

That might help me a lot.  Number three is peeping inside her shell and has made a breathing hole in it.  I'll check them tomorrow or the day after.

None of the others hatched, in fact I'm going backwards.  One of the chicks had a herniated umbilicus.  It was the prettiest one but I had no choice but to cull it.

Mama is taking good care of her two babies.  She's taught them were the feeder and waterer are.  They're in one of my huge fish containers in the fish room where it's always nice and warm.

I can't tell them apart huh.  I'm not 100% sure, but I believe they're both females.

What sort of person would do such a thing to a helpless chicken?  Very bad IMO

..looks like a kid put his 'tennies' on him, small shoes.......and it's not that cruel...the rooster seems to like it  huh...but I hope that's the extent of it....

It's funny.  The rooster isn't forced to wear them all the time, I'm sure.  It did him no harm.  Lighten up, Barb.

Nope, I guess it is the PETA coming out in me.  I have a thing about mistreatment of animals.  I stand by my original comment.

OK.  I think that the PETA people are a bunch of misguided nut cases.  No harm came to the rooster..  You can see by his condition that he's well cared for.  It's a funny video and nothing more.

A rooster is not smart enough to be taught to put on 2 shoes and pull the tab into place.  A human did it, but no harm was done.  It was a silly funny video.  Big deal.
