As human population and technology expand, our hegemony over the natural environment expands without any wisdom about how to maintain it.
This will lead to disaster, of course.

After the meteorite impact that ended the rein of the dinosaurs, the ecology collapsed and was unable to support any vertebrate life larger than your forearm.

A species lost here, a species lost there.
Pretty soon you will lose a whole ecosystem.
More species will be lost, biological energy utilization will plummet, and everyone will be quite unhappy!
