This is a part of the scablands of E.Washington.

It was formed about 10-13 thousand years age when the glacier dam holding back a lake of glacial melt water gave way and lead to a flow of water estimated to be equal to the combined flow of all the rivers in the world (for a few days).
The lake water was from melt from the receding glaciers over the continent at the end of the last ice age.

The same thing is also responsible more than 30 times as the glacier reformed the dam, the water built up, and then it broke again.
Boulders as big as houses were transported hundreds of miles.
The lake is called glacial lake Missoula.
