Title: Shrimp Talk
Post by: Ron Sower on July 23, 2020, 02:13:49 PM
...the bloody mary shrimp I got from Stan are reproducing like crazy now and I have been selling, trading and giving a bunch away...Friend Stan is no longer interested in BMs so I picked up all he had left from him...I got my original start from him...

...I noticed that the color in his was more solid and intense...I feed mine mostly different fish foods that I have, with emphasis on Spirulina flakes which they jump on...so I asked him what he feeds his and he told me the brands...they are all especially made/marketed for shrimp...I'm going to order some and see if, over time, they all have the same intensity of color...

...I'm doin the same with my tank of blue neos too...but the younger ones actually seem to have more and deeper blue than the originals...

...what are you folks feeding your shrimp...

I use Hakari Algae wafers and Nug Bombs.  The Nug Boms are made for shrimp.

Tell us what you ordered for yours.  I'm all ears.

..Stan feeds them Bacter AE, Shrimp King Complete, and Hikari Shrimp Cuisine...
...a fellow in our club is building a commercial shrimp sale business....we got our original BMs from him...I'm going to ask him what he feeds....

...the other guy I was mentioning says, "I feed all kinds of stuff. Main staples are nug bombs from Danqautics and started using Plamski a lot. Mainly his shine and protein.... I also feed leafs and snowflake if I'm going to be gone for a while." ...so there you go....looks like you're on the right track Liz!

Since I am the newbie in this arena I looked for shrimp specific food after a few failures getting started. For the time being I am feeding Bacter AE and and Shrimp King Snow Pops. They are killing this stuff.

I am going to order some Nug Bomz. I was looking for Nug Bombs and kept ending up on insecticide pages. Finally found the right site. lol

There's a guy I just found on AB.  Take a look at his shrimp auctions.  From what I can see he's a very good breeder.  I can't buy anything until I get my SS check without making myself have to suffer.

Good thread Ron!!  I will read it all when I have time, very busy here right now.  Liz, save some yellows for me, I will take a few red and yellow from you some time.  My plan is to have 4 small tanks of primary color shrimp, red, blue, green and yellow.  All lined up on one big stand.   Or I could have a "skittles" tank I see pics of at the shrimp forum.  But prefer single color tanks.

I think I got shrimp first.  I received about 4 cherries in a small bag of Lime Green Endlers I got from a guy in Texas at least 10 yrs ago.  Maybe longer.  I think I sent some to Liz when I had lots.  A few years ago I had a tank with what seemed to be thousands of them.  So many I had to dump many.  Felt bad about it. Now I have none.  My Endlers ate all of them.  Now shrimp only tanks.

I think I'm going to buy from the Aquabid guy.  I can tell that he is very serious about breeding shrimp.  Don't know for sure though...I just sent him an email.  He's in FL so shipping won't be so bad and they will likely arrive a day before your friend's from AZ.

I'm so bad.  I shouldn't be buying stuff right now, but I am weak.  I decided that if I were going to hell I might as well have fun and go in a hand basket.  I just asked Scott, my shrimp man if I could put his red rili shrimp in a tank of baby snots.  I don't see why not...If he says it's no problem I'll have I'll buy the auction and have him put it in the same shipment as my yellows he will ship Monday.  All I lack is the emerald greens but I don't have a tank for them unless I stick them in a 10 gallon.  Besides I haven't found a source for them.

Wow Liz, you are doing great with shrimp.  Going down in a handbasket made me laugh.  I never used to know the joy of these little shrimp.  I still can't find out how long a life they have, and how often a female can hatch out a bunch of eggs.  And how often do they molt?  Any of you know??

I have no clue.  All I know is that they make more than enough babies to replace the ones that die.

This morning I did a big clean on the 2 tanks I'll be putting my new shrimp in.  I even found enough poret foam to make a filter for one of the 29s.  I'm gonna have to take the rainbows I'm growing out before I can start a search for emerald greens.

...I got the new shrimp foods Sunday...yesterday I put them in the shrimp tanks and...WOW!...they jumped on them!...

...After all the Bloody Mary shrimp I've sold, traded or given away in the last 2-3 week, I looked at the shrimp all over the new foods and I still have over a hundred in there and tiny shrimplets everywhere!...and this is in a 5g tank!... ??? I will begin culling ruthlessly for more intense colors...

... when I get home from Sedona, I'm going to order the yellows...

...I wonder how long the shrimp fad will last in the hobby, or if it's here to stay?...what do you guys think?...

I am sure I have had Cherry reds for 10 yrs.  All gone now to the Endlers but maybe I can get some from Liz in the Fall.  I so enjoy watching my little blue shrimp.  I caught one munching on a molt yesterday.  They are so fun to watch up close with a mag. glass!

I forgot you didn't have the reds, Barb.  Of course you can have some.  I'm so looking forward to getting my yellow and rili reds.  Tracking says Friday USPS must be using a horse and buggy.  They're just coming from Fla.

I asked my shrimp man what he feeds his.  He feeds them canned green beans!  I heard that from a shrimp guy on Simply a while back, but I found it hard to believe that canned green beans were a good food.  Apparently they are.

The USPS is in a lot of trouble right now with the Covid-19 and financial situation. I have a friend who's getting me some yellow shrimp from his wholesaler at cost.

I will be getting them on Thursday. I also have some Nerite Snails and Otos coming with that order. all of that at cost.

Needless to say that I take care of him when it comes to Angels and Bristlenoses. He's young and he hustles moving fish.

I am almost finished setting up the tank for the yellow shrimp I have arriving tomorrow. After I have the water parameters correct I will drop some Bacter AE and maybe a have of the Shrimp King Snow Pop and let it break down.

I did put a well seeded sponge to get this tank started. My biggest concern in making sure there is enough food available initially. The Bacter AE is supposed to produce biofilm and I'll also drop a well seasoned plant in there.

...next i slid the new rack in place and it fits perfectly!...good ol' measuring tapes really work well!...Placed all the tanks on the shelves and did temporary hookups for lights and air...I guess today I will refine that portion of the work...

...Willie, I saw your question about temps in the shrimp tanks...I haven't really checked mine til right now...they are 70-72... and they are breeding like crazy...

...one thing i've learned from others is that neos don't like a lot of fluctuation in the water parameters...so I don't do heavy water changes...when I remove some shrimp, I dip out water for the container and put the shrimp in it...then I add RO water back to the tank...If i haven't removed shrimp this way for awhile, I may take out about 10% of the water and add the RO back to the tank...

...my yellows are so new that they haven't begun breeding yet so I can't tell if this is going to work for them too...time will tell...

....I have floaters in all the shrimp tanks...Dwarf water lettuce in one, Salvinia in two and Im' getting red root floaters at the swap for the other 2 tanks I'm cycling... and either Susswassertang, guppy grass, or that nasty old Java fern in them as well... one of these per tank...I don't like t mix them..

...the Bloody Mary tank has Safe-T-Sorb as substrate, and the others have no substrate...

...I'm also using botanicals this go-around with the shrimp...the usual almond leaves, etc...but I'm adding some seed pods from a tree we have in our yard...no clue what it is!...botanicals turn the water amber color...

...one thing i've learned from others is that neos don't like a lot of fluctuation in the water parameters...so I don't do heavy water changes...when I remove some shrimp, I dip out water for the container and put the shrimp in it...then I add RO water back to the tank...If i haven't removed shrimp this way for awhile, I may take out about 10% of the water and add the RO back to the tank...

...my yellows are so new that they haven't begun breeding yet so I can't tell if this is going to work for them too...time will tell...

....I have floaters in all the shrimp tanks...Dwarf water lettuce in one, Salvinia in two and Im' getting red root floaters at the swap for the other 2 tanks I'm cycling... and either Susswassertang, guppy grass, or that nasty old Java fern in them as well... one of these per tank...I don't like t mix them..

...the Bloody Mary tank has Safe-T-Sorb as substrate, and the others have no substrate...

...I'm also using botanicals this go-around with the shrimp...the usual almond leaves, etc...but I'm adding some seed pods from a tree we have in our yard...no clue what it is!...botanicals turn the water amber color...

Thanks for the feedback Ron. I am using re-mineralized distilled water and I think I'm on the right track. I haven't had the yellows that long and they are pretty young.

I will add some almond leaves that I have though I may soak them first to leech out some of the tannins. I have gravel in both of my tanks. I may gradually remove it and go bare bottom.

Another shrimp tip o the day,
I put an algae covered amazon sword plant leaf (from my discus tank) into my new little bubble bowl with 7 baby shrimp.  In 2 days these babies have cleaned the leaf completely, like there was never green fuzzy algae all over it.  Will keep doing this.  And NugBomz of course.

Also, I use just rainwater in my 2 shrimp containers.  Don't know if they would like my tap water, and don't want to try it.  With rainwater I can grow lots of plants that die in the tap water.

I have read that the shrimpies need a lot of calcium in their water.  My water from the tap has a kH of just 4.  Your rain water has almost no carbonates.  I'm going to start floating a cuttle bone in my tanks.  Since you're using rain water you might want to consider doing the same.

That's why I use Nugbomz, high in calcium.  I could put in a piece of coral.....
Title: Re: Shrimp Talk
Post by: LizStreithorst on August 25, 2020, 07:20:00 PM
that would work.  Personally I kind of believe that fish get the minerals they need from food.  I've found it to be true with Discus as has the Willie on Simply.  Coral or cuttlebone can't hurt, though.

......I rigged two 24" lights in the shrimp rack yesterday...bought them from Amazon...Just Barrina LED shop lights...by attaching them to the rack self above, I won't have to be moving the lights around every time I go in with a net to remove some shrimp, or when I'm using my forceps to move stuff around...If I like these 2, I will put 2 more on the other 2 shelves....

...While at the swap, Mike Coleman, my shrimp master, had a kit of shrimp foods from Plamski Shrimp...He calls it Daily CAre...It has 7 different food packets so you feed out of one packet each day for balanced diet...I've started that to see if the shrimp produce any more (not that I really need them to do that), and if their color intensifies (which I would like to see)...

...later today I'm going to re-rig the airlines going to the sponge filters in all the shrimp tanks...I bought some silicone tubing that stays flexible...getting tired of dealing with that old plastic tubing that gets so stiff over time...

Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed a few different types of white worms in my shrimp tanks. I know that these worms are in fish tanks too but the fish usually make short work of them.

I've been looking into this and I think some of the worms may be Planaria which can be detrimental to shrimp. The main culprit is me and my overfeeding tendencies.

Are any of you familiar with these parasites? I bought some "No Planaria" but I'm hesitant to use it since my shrimp are finally in a good place and I don't want to lose any.

I've looked in some of the shrimp groups on Facebook and the reviews are mostly good. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for that video Ron. What I learned from that was that what I am really looking not Planaria but one of those other worms and seed shrimp.

I will definitely cut down the feeding and continue vacuuming the gravel. I'll also squeeze in an extra water change to see if their is any improvement.

BTW, that guy with the pic of the beautiful reds never responded to my question.  So now we know to avoid his auctions.

I can't imagine what happened to my yellows.  I think they all died.  I don't see any Ping-Pong balls jumping around in any of the female's bodies.  Finally, after adding some reds from a different source I see ping pong balls in one female.  I'm thinking that it's important to add new blood after a while because the constant in breeding seems to reduce fertility.  Anyone have any other theories?  On a happy note my rili red's are producing like crazy.

That's interesting Liz. I haven't had any luck with my blues but maybe I am just too blind to see them. I haven't seen any juggling of egg either. huh

I've finally saw my first berried shrimp. Is is a small yellow one and she stays in the food jar. Must be a smart one. I do have 2 babies (getting bigger daily) in the tank but I never observed a berried female. The tank has a lot of java moss so I probably just missed it. Hopefully there are more babies hiding. mim mim mim

Congrats, Willie!  I'm down to just one yellow.  I'm getting a little disgusted with shrimp.  All populations are waning except the rili reds.

...my blues are about gone...checked with my mentor and he said to check water parameters, which I seldom do...the KH was 0...so I added some of our wonderful limestone rock water to the tank yesterday to see if that helps any...we'll see what happens...

...I'm still not happy with my yellows in the breeding tank...color just isn't strong....however I put a few of the washed out ones in my tetra tank with dark wood in it and they just pop with color against the wood...so I think it's the lighting on my shrimp rack...same with the Bloodies...

Thanks Liz. My blues are waning also. I blame myself for not being ready for the shrimp (sorry Liz) when I ordered them. Now I am down to what I think are three big females and what I hope is a small male. I did learn a lot about shrimp with these but I learned it the hard way with lots of losses. huh

I still have about a dz blues, but they don't do any breeding for some reason.  But they seem to be healthy.  I did see one female that may have some eggs, but will need a mag. glass to see for sure when she gets close to the glass.

I've wondered if they could be seasonal breeders for a long time but had never read anything that said that.  I dug down in Google results just now and found that their natural breeding season is summer.  I don't know if that's the cause of the problems we're having but it's something to consider.  https://www.fishkeepingworld.com/cherry-shrimp/

Well my fears of a female dropping her eggs came true. The semi good news is that I caught her in the act when I got home today and I quick syphoned about 20 and put them in a net over an airstone in a 2.5 gallon tank. Hopefully they will hatch.

I may drop a bit of H2O2 in the tank to prevent fungus. This female is still carrying some eggs so she may been startled into dropping her eggs when I turned on the lights after being gone for a couple of days.

Other good news is that there are still 2 fully berried yellows not including the one that dropped. So an additional one got berried while I was gone.

Those little white dots are live baby shrimp, not eggs.  Neocardia are live bearers.

Finally I have baby yellow shrimp. I counted 5 and I hope there are more. These are very tiny but already yellow. They are much smaller than the 2 little shrimp I found a couple of weeks ago.

I still have 3 berried shrimp left so there will be more. Good thing they are in an algae filled tank that's a mess. Plenty of food and hiding places in there.

I looked in my yellow shrimp tank this morning and the first thing I noticed was a dead male. I hope he was not my only male because that will slow down my production.

I have 7 adults left and I know two are berried. I also have over 50 babies growing out so the future looks good. I need to get a couple of Blue Dream males to get that tank on track since I have 4 large deep blue females that need some attention.

When the spring comes I need to order a Green Jade colony and some Bloody Marys to complete my Neocaridina setup.

One I have this going I will play around with some Caradinas.

I fed my small blue shrimp tank this morning, I only put food in twice a week.  There are 4 little blues and a ton of java moss, gravel and a little pottery dish (I made it) that I put the food into.  Awhile ago I looked in there and in the bowl, eating, was a berried female, and she was popping out babies!!!!!!  Right in the feeding bowl.  Right next to her was the one assassin snail in the tank.  He was busy eating and didn't even notice what was going on right next to him.   I don't know how many babies were popped out, but the female is only 1/2" long. She is only about 6 mo. old.  A very exciting day, didn't know shrimp could be so entertaining!  My other shrimp tank, also blues from Liz, has 7 adults but heavily planted and I never see any babies, but there are probably some in there.  Also a Betta.  But he stays at the top of the tank where I feed him twice a day.

Barb, that Java Moss you sent me is completely out of control. lol ;D My shrimp love it and the yellow ones are breeding regularly.
