Title: A big scare yesterday evening
Post by: LizStreithorst on May 08, 2020, 11:37:20 AM
It was starting to get dark so I went out as usual to make sure the chicks went in their house before the automatic door closed.  There are always a few stupid ones.

They stay close to their pen and house when they're out  but they scratch around and eat green stuff and hunt bugs.  That's what they were doing when I went out to check on them.  They suddenly scattered in to two groups and ran under bushes.  I looked in the direction they ran from and there was a coyote stalking them.  I saw him and in a moment he saw me.  He turned and ran silently back into the woods toward the river.

I called my neighbor who was raised here and knows everything about critters.  He said that a coyote could jump a 4' fence if he wanted to.  Tomorrow I'll have to buy more fencing and make it about 3' higher.

...coyotes are a common thing out here in desert country...we saw them in Federal way Washington too... Iknow they are pests for some people, but I love to hear them yipping at night...don't hear them here, but we did when we were In Florence, out there in the middle of the desert...

When I lived in Northern Illinois they were all over the place. I encountered them a couple of times while walking Kobe.

I once saw some kids playing with one. At that time I had never seen one and this one was a darker one so I thought it was some kind of dog. A neighbor of mine chased it away from the kids.

I wish I had a Great Pyrenese to proction duty.  I used to have them for the goats and I never lost a single one.  Not even a small kid.

Around here they just climb fences like bird dogs.  Most of the chicken pens here have wire covering the tops.  The farm next door with buffalo say they can't keep a barn cat because of the coyotes.  Good luck protecting yours Liz.

If I raise the existing fence up a couple of feet I could mayby stretch some chicken wire on top of it.  I'll see how it goes.  These Beilefelder chickens are bred to live in a free range situation.  I'll be letting them run free with access to the chicken house as soon as they are big enough to fly up in the trees.  I know I'll be taking a chance, but I just cannot keep an animal cooped up.
