Weekly grocery shopping done, now for water changes. A trip to the apple orchard is coming up too, not today but shortly.  Can't wait for some fresh apple pie and apple fritters.

I busted my put today after a good house cleaning and doing a couple of dogs, when I started setting up a planted tank for Discus.  I used rotted goat shit and the frass from my meal worms as fertilizer and 3 terribly heavy (for an old woman who back is falling apart) bags of smaller that pea gravel over it all.

Thank God I have nothing that must be done tomorrow.  My back will be pleading for a break.

It's a 100.  I've used rotted goat shit under the gravel before and plants grow like crazy in it.

....how's it effect the water parameters?

I donno.  First time I did it I put in too much.  After I had added a large spawn of Angels to the tank the water turned dark brown.  I thought the babies were gonners for sure.  Instead, the next day the babies had grown and continued to grow until they were almost double their size in less than a week and the water was more of a tea color.  I decided that there must have been microorganisms in the poo that were released into the water and the babies were eating them.  It was very interesting, indeed.

This time I made a different mistake.  I stupidly added about a quart of meal worm frass.  I say stupidly because the frass is almost like a powder.  So now, my water is not only tea color which is fine with me, but the frass has made the water cloudy as well.  I've had 2 Magnum 250's running on the tank since yesterday afternoon and have changed the cartridges 3 times.  I'll do a big WC on the tank today and see if that helps some.  I'm for sure not going to put any fish in the tank with it looking like this.

I use potting soil from the garden mart which is probably the same thing only in a different form.  But I don't put it on the bottom of the tank, I put it in flower pots covered with gravel to grow my plants. The only thing I have on the bottom of the tanks is sand in a couple cory tanks. Everything else is bare bottom.
