Title: The 125...
Post by: Ron Sower on November 20, 2017, 12:00:00 PM
...I've been letting others encourage and influencing me to use wood in the new setup's aquascaping...King even gave me some nice pieces to use...and yesterday afternoon I tied on some rocks to the bottom of the stump wood and situated it in with some river rock...

...I've had this 'scape idea floating around in my brain for quite awhile now and it doesn't include any major wood hardscape material...so as I look at the tank this morning, I decided to take the advice I often give to others..."It's YOUR hobby, YOUR tanks, YOUR fish and plants, so make it what YOU want it to be!"...

..so after I got back from the meeting this morning, I removed the stump...! |^|...now throughout the rest of the day, I will take moments to arrange the river rock and start adding plants...

...I've been going along slowly with it, taking the plants out of the 54 and cleaning them, removing dead or dying leaves, and trimming the best shoots to use and then placing them in the 125...daily bringing 6-18 gallons of RO water daily from the vending machines at the clubhouse...I have an HMF that should arrive today, and a few plants from a friend in WA...The plan is to have everything moved over by Sunday night....

...I don't like showing pics until my tanks are grown in but I'll attach some here...these pics sere just quick snaps...best ones will be when I take them at night and there is no glare or washout...

...I really hate the way a tank looks when it's first planted...unless one has tons of fully grown plants it always looks so sparse!...I'll really start liking it in about 4 -6 weeks once the plants get some growth on them...

...yesterday the HMF Tower came early in the day and I got it installed in the end of the tank nearest the wall...I scooped out a lot of substrate to set it down on the bottom of the tank...that stirred up a lot of fine cloudy sediment and the water is still milky this morning...but it will clear in time....

...I use Safe-T-Sorb for substrate and it takes a LOT of rinsing and even after that it still clouds the water...but I've been using it for years now and it always settles out and the "dust" works its way to the bottom of the substrate layer....thanks to the little hardworking cories!...

...as I observe the tank through the next few weeks, I know I'll be moving plants around a little and maybe even remove some...and I've already started removing some of the rocks...

...UPDATE...

...the light came in...It's an EVO Green Element, not Green Leaf...but it was a 10000K Actinic and I sent it back for the one I ordered which was a 6500K...finally got it yesterday and I set it up last night...

...so during the time that I had used several lights that apparently I shouldn't have because I now am blessed with a good bit of algae on my plants...including BGA!...yuck...

...anyway... I spent about an hour last night, before giving in to the rack monster, watching my Panda cories spawning....the males were relentless with the girls...remind me of male guppies on the scent...

...even though the substrate is pretty well covered with plants, there was enough open space that I could see the females clasping single eggs in their ventral fins...then they'd scoot in under a plant leaf and stay there a while before returning to the fracas...I doubt that the eggs or fry will survive due to the 2 large blue silver female angels I keep in that tank...they're always foraging around for food...

...on the way to the airport to pick up Lucy last night, I went to Aquarium Arts in Mesa....the had Jagers but not a 250w...so when I got home I ordered 2 last night from eBay...

...he also had some really young Congo tetras -about 1" long - so I got 9 of them...they are shoaling together very nicely, but not mixing in with the 5 adults I already have in there... They don't look anything like the adults yet...colors are blah...tails haven't even begun to differentiate...but there are some with a little of the white edging in the caudal....

I purchased mine from Ken's, but he shows them as out-of-stock all the time now.  That used to be my go-to place but it's really went down hill in the past several years.   :(

I buy food and a few other things from Kens and have no problems so far.  Some of the things on the website are marked as "out of stock" though. Looks like maybe permanently.

... we have a gal in the park here that does a lot of handyman (handywoman?) work...I'm getting her to do the pex plumbing for the rain barrel RO setup...I'll have her come off the cold water line in the bath room which is next to the closet where the barrel is located...
[if this works out okay, I'll get her to plumb for the dishwasher Lucy ordered]

...my hardware manager friend, who's into aquariums and has turned into a plant fanatic since he met me, said he would help me do it for nothing...but I know she needs money and she never charged much for other small jobs I've had her do...so this will work out fine and the good karma will still be intact!...

...so once that's done, I'll devise some way to have an automatic cutoff on the line from the RO unit so I don't have to watch for the barrel to fill...overflow is the scariest issue for me in all this...   ANY SUGGESTIONS?

...You guys and gals are the brains for this stuff...I pay more attention to what I get from you than any other group...You know why?...Because you are solid support...That's why!....

...The RO unit is up on the wall by my bathroom sink...Ran it for 1 hour to clear out the membrane as the instructions said to do...produced a little over 1.5 gallons of filtered H2O...hmmmm....it says it produces 50 gallons a day....may not quite make the mark!...

...next I'll drill a hole in the floor and run the tubing under the house and up thru the floor to the barrel in a little bit...this will involve a run to the hardware store for some more tubing....

.....if going down thru the floor and back up.....the flow will be reduced more.....I don't think RO units provide much 'head'...... huh

Also, I think the water pressure has a lot to do with how much water you can push through the unit.  The 50 gal/day rating may be with pressure higher normally attainable.

...I imagine both of you are correct...right now tho the unit is above the faucet and is draining DOWN , not pushing up, right into the sink...the filtered water is going into gallon jugs right now and I'm dumping them into the barrel until I drill and run the tube under the house...anyway, it is what it is..!

...this one is an RO Buddie made to attache to a faucet...won it in a raffel at ARK meeting...

LOL  I figured as much.  Mainly the valve lets me slow down the flow of water.  Most of my tanks have substrate and plants and the pump puts out too much flow when filling these.   ;D

...the day after Stephan replied the issue cleared up before I got an opportunity to use Stephan's suggestion which was to give the filter a light cleaning and put it back in...he said this happens with HMFs and it will go away on it's on or persist...he said the filter is plenty large enough to handle the bioload of the 125 with the fish and plants I listed for him...

...anyway the water is sparkling now...

...it's really important to me that this huge sponge filter works out...I haven't heard of anyone else using them on larger tanks...the principle is there and I see no reason it should not be really effective...the only thing is that with heavy plantings there tend to be a lot of leafy parts floating loosely in the water column....when it gets to be too much I'll stand over the tank and net out most of it, and if the stuff is smaller I put a large Aquaclear HOB on it for a day or so...kinda like you do with your HOTs...which I may get one day...

....last night Miss Lucy and I were just lazing in front of the 125 just taking in the activity and talking about a future 'scaping plan I was dreaming up, when we got a most pleasant surprise.... a 3/8" Panda Cory went scooting by on the front edge of the tank right at substrate level from one end to to the other! :D :D....what a treat!...

...I think I wrote several weeks ago when the Pandas were spawning...I can't believe that any eggs survived with all the trimming and pulling I've done since then!...

... I just love these little surprises!...

...agreed.....every once in a bit we'll see a cory fry or a bn fry out of nowhere......a completely unexpected treat  |^|

Ron, I look forward to some pics of your tank.  I bet that little cory is so cute!
